World Congress Reports, 790 Jews
In. China Seek Emigration. Permits
There are 790 Jews. in China
today and all, without exception,
wish. to emigrate, according to
"Et report issued by Dr. Nehemiah
Robinson, director of the Insti-
tute of Jewish Affair's of the
VVorld_ Jewish Congress.
In the article, Dr. Robinson
states that the 780 Jews are the
remnant of 24.000 - Jewish living
in China at the outbreak of
World War II. Some 18,000 of
the latter figure were refugees
from Central Europe.'
Of the present number, there
are 310 • . in Shanghi, 350
in Harbin and 120 in Tient-
sin, with 10 scattered through-
out the land. About 300 are
over 60, and only 115 under
18, with a total of 160 consi&
erect "hard core" cases.
Although the first concrete
knowledge of Jews in China was
reported. by Marco, the Jewish
communities of China are con- •
sidered of "camparatively re-
cent vintage."
The first modern Jewish set-
tlers were British Jews who
came from Hong Kong and In- .
dia in the 1840's. Their numbers •
increased after the Russo-
Japanese War of .1904 when .
Jewish soldiers in the Russian •
Army remained in Manchuria
and were joined -•14 several
families of Siberian Jews.
Later, ; larger numbers came
after the Russian Revolution.
The great influx, however, came •
between 1937 to 1939 when about
20,000 refugees evacuated Cen-
tral Europe. With a number re-
emigrating, the total population
at the outbreak of World War II
was about 24,000.
The struggle for existence
among the refugees during the
Japanese occupation cost 2,000
lives, and, at the end of the
war, 16,000 Jews • emigrated
through the Joint Distribution
Committee. Others left under-
