Eban Urges Action in Bat Galim Case

Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News

UNITED NATIONS—Israel Am-
basador Abba Eban has called
on New Zealand's Ambassador
Sir Leslie Munro, chairman of
the United Nations Security
Council, to discuss the continued
failure of Egypt to comply with
a UN request that the Israel
freighter "Bat Galim" be re-
leased.
It was learned from informed
sources that Ambassador ,. Eban
pointed out that Egypt has
taken no measures to comply
with a wish expressed by a ma-
jority of the Security Council
that the ship and its cargo be
restored to Israel and - that the

cases.
Israel circles emphasized that
the Security Council's recent dis-
cussion rules-out any procedure
which would violate the 1951
resolution on free passage
through the, Suez . Canal.
- Egyptian sources have sug-
gested that the ship may be re-
leased if it makes its way back
to Israel without going through
the canal.
Israel is making it clear that
such solution is unacceptable
because of the right of Israeli
ships to use the international
waterway.
It is felt by Israeli sources that
the matter cannot be regarded
as closed and is liable *.to arise.
