Keeping the Record Straight:
Two Others Given JWV Honors
Editor, The Jewish News:
In his column in a recent is-
suie of The Jewish News, Danny
Raskin, commenting on the hon-
orary membership bestowed by
the Jewish War Veterans on
Boris M. Joffe, executive direc-
tor •of our Community Council,
stated that he is the - first De-
troiter to be so honored.
Sonorary membership in JWV
is conferred but rarely and then
only upon individuals who have
rendered outstanding service in
the twin causes so dear to JWV
—our country and our faith. .
It will detract nothing from
the honor, do deservedly accord-
ed Mr. Joffe, to record in the in-
terests of accuracy, that he is
not the first to be so honored.
Several years ago when I was
president of the JWV Memorial
Home Association, Leonard N.
Simons was elected an honorary
member of our board of direc-
tors. This was in recognition of
his .selfless help which enabled
us to build that fine memorial
to the 300 Jewish war dead from
this city and to__ the spirit of
Jewish patriotic service and sac-
rifice which they symbolize.
The only other person so hon-
ored was Meyer Silverman,
founder and first president of
the Gold Star Parents of JWV.
We of JWV do want to keep
the record straight.
Sincerely,
SAMUEL J. RHODES.

Comments from Young Adults
Editor, The Jewish News:
In your "Purely Commentary"
of the Dec. 31 issue of The Jew-
ish News, you expressed your
sentiments concerning the
Young Adult program which was
the only Tercentenary program
to be cancelled.
Needless to say, we of the

Young Adult Tercentenary Sub-
committee share your regret in
this incident knowing that our
meetings, contact s, publicity,
script writing and all our ar-
rangements were for naught.
However, your analysis of the
factors leading to the failure of
program, we feel, is incomplete.
To a certain extent, interest on
the part of the Young Adult is
lacking. But the situation is af-
fected by a number of other
factors which those Young
Adults who are interested, even
eager to put on a Tercentenary
program, find difficult to over-
come.
At our initial meeting, there
was an enthusiastic response on
the part of all people present,
because of the chairmanship of
capable men who instilled in us
the desire to sponsor such a
program.
In spite of our progress, en-
thusiasm waned because of lack
of leadership and liaison be-
tween the city-wide Tercenten-
ary committee and our own sub-
committee.
Had there been more interest,
leadership, guidance and en-
couragement on the part of the
Committee of 300, the affair
could have been, and still can
be, a success, and one of which
the Jewish community of Detroit
may be proud.
Sincerely Yours,
JANIS LAZAR,
MARVIN SCHPEISSER,
I. KOENIGSBERG,
JULIUS SHWARTZ, •
Members of the Young
Adult Tercentenary
Committee.
Editor's Note: Our comments
were made in order to stimulate
action by our young adults. We
would like to be vindicated in
our hopes that young adults can
act for themselves in planning
participation in community af-
fairs, and they certainly should
be able to effect plans with the
aid of trained workers. A social
worker was assigned to assist
the young adults in their Ter-
centenary planning, yet the pro-
gram did not materialize. Lame
excuses will not solve communi-
ty problems—and the excuse of-
fered here is lame. Let's get to-
gether, young folks, jointly to
solve what is admittedly a prob-
lem: The difficulty in interest-
ing young adults in Jewish com-
munity affairs. Cancellation of a
Tercentenary program is the
least of our problems. Inability
of our young adults to exercise
initiative DOES represent a
problem.
