Detroit News' Commentator and
most distinguished writer, made
the following comments on Is-
rael Ambassador Eban's speech
at Notre .Dame:
Historic Miracle
I Last Tuesday, Abba Eban, Is-
• ael's ambassador to the United
Stales, spoke in South Bend at
the invitation of . the University
of Notre Dame. Or so the Com-
mentator supposes; he has yet
to diicover any reference to the
speech in the press, to whom ad-
vance copies- were circulated by
an embassy rightry proud.
The reason .for this neglect is

I "Rarely in history," said Abba.
Eban, "has any achievement

place argued against its success.
A few decades ago the prospect
that an independent Jewish state
could be established in its an-
. cient homeland appeared so fan-
' tastic as to bring its advocates
under the suspicion of insanity .
"Yet within a single lifetime
we have passed from a world in
which the existence of an inde-
pendent Israel seemed incon-
ceivable into a world , - which
seems inconceivable without its
!existence. I know of %.--feW - more
tangible testimonies in history to
the power of the human will to
assert itself against material
odds. That is perhaps the pri-
mary value of Israel's rebirth to
all who- are concerned with the
vindication of faith against the
fatalistic or deterministic the-
ories of history, which see the
human being not as the primary
agent of historic processes but
merely as their helpless subject
matter."

A World Conscience
Mr. Eban promulgated the
proposition that the recognition
of Israel's nationhood was due.
to the stirring of a world . con-
science which could not endure
the thought "that every nation
would be granted its freedom,
among those which had suffered
under the heel of the Fascist
tyranny, except the people who
had suffered the most. All the
victims of tyranny would be es-
tablish'ed in sovereignty except
the first and most sorely ravaged
amongst the targets of totalitari-
an persecution," which had cost
an estimated 6,000,000 Jewish
lives.
So from the status of a dis-
contented ward of an embarrass-
ed guardian, Isriael was promot-
ed to nationhood by the world
community. "The benefit, nay,
the elementary right, which it
conferred upon the Arab people
in such abundant profusion was
also bestowed upon the Jewish
people albeit within meager and
austere limits.
"This picture of an Arab lib-
