broken line, were all rabbis.
The family name Daiches will
be found in the Jewish Encyclo-
pedia and other Jewish refer-
ence books. It was not until this
generation that'`the family name
was changed to Daiches to aid
in pronunciation.
Dr. Daiches is an authority on
many literary figures, but he
considers himself only a critic
of Whitman. His introduction to
Whitman for serious study came
last March when he was asked
to speak at the Whitman ex-
hibit, which Mr. Feinberg ar-
ranged for the U. S. State De-
partment in London.
Dr. Daiches received his- doc-
torate from Oxford, writing his
thesis on translation of the Bible
into English. His interests also
revolve around John Milton and
other 17th Century English au-
thors • and the modern poets of
the 1930's.
He was one of six contributors
to Milton Hindus' "Leaves of
Grass—One Hundred Years Aft-
er," which was published only
recently in honor of the Whit-
man Centennial. Dr. Daiches
authored the chapter on "Walt
Whitman—Impressionist Philos-
opher."
