He told us that he lived in Dearborn, while we, in turn, casually said that we lived in Oak Park. His next remark amazed us. "Oh, I didn't know you were Jewish." His statement was made with- out malice, just matter-of- factly, but it aroused our curios - Ay. We asked him how it was he asked the question. He an- swered that he thought of Oak Park as being a Jewish com- munity. Through further conversa- tion, we learned that because he had seen one synagogue and heard that others were to be built, Oak Park was now considered as being a 'Jewish section. That brought us to call the Oak Park City Hall where Har- old Schone, the City Manager, informed us that there were no statistics available on religious or nationality breakdowns . of the population. We asked him, however, if he could give us an estimate of the Jewish population.
