Roycourt, Huntington Woods, prominent community leader, is mourned in Zionist and Bnai Brith ranks. Mr. Kurland died after a long illness, in Sinai Hospital. Surviving him are his wife, Rose; two sons, Dr. Norman David Kurland, a member of the faculty of Ho- bart Smith Col- lege, Geneva, N.Y., and Rich- ard Erwin Kur- land; two grand- A. Kurland children; a brother, John; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Peitz and Mrs. Elsie Lark- ey, of Sommerville, N.J. Immediately after coming to this country in 1912, Mr. Kurland became active in Zionist circles and was a leader in the Young Maccabaean Society. He was president of the Jewish National Fund Council of Detroit during the eventful years of 1930 to 1932, when he managed the visit here of the late Menahem Ussishkin, the world JNF leader. A former president of Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith, he was ac-. tive in numerous Bnai Brith projects and was editor of the Pisgah Broadcaster. He was a member of Arlazaroff Branch of Farband and of the Suburban Temple. From 1931 to 1938 he direct- ed the Jewish Radio Forum whose educational programs attracted wide interest. Born in Russian Poland, May 15, 1898, he was educated in the Passaic, N.J., public and high schools. He received his law degree from the Detroit College of Law and was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1924. He was member of the Detroit and. American Bar Associations. He was the author of numerous legal articles and had written extensively for the Jewish press.. He was active in the American Jewish Congress, was chairman and counsel of the Michigan De- positors League, was counsel for the Guardian National Bank De- positors League and the Deposi- tors Committee for the Detroit National Bank, and fostered the movement for the payment of 100 per cent to depositors in closed national banks during the 1930s. The late Frank Murphy. as Governor of Michigan, named him counsel of the Michigan Public Trust Commission. He was married to Rose Sam- ter on July 22, 1926.
