Take Over Young Adults

Editor, The Jewish News:
Just read your 'editorial on
why the young adult Tercen-
tenary affair failed to materia-
lize. I read this with much in-
terest because I, too, had a
rather sad experience trying to
organize a Young Adult Group
at one of our synagogues. It
seemed that there was a lack
of willingness to come out to
programs planned, no matter
what the nature of the program
was.
The young men and women
who were attending college said
they were too busy to come—
those who did were looking for
a social outlet without wanting

to put time into planning, etc.
At one meeting, we had more
men than women and that
seemed interesting ; but at other
meetings the opposite was true.
Though the age of this parti-
cular group was from 18 up,
they didn't carry out the res-
ponsibilities and duties they
accepted—they were lax about
their jobs and had to be pushed.
A thought occurred to me that
a plan for young adult partici-
pation could be worked out on
a city level by the Service Group
of the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion. Programs should be very
carefully planned, not to inter-
fere with schoof exams, etc. The
reason this might work out is
that t h e Women's Division
seems to do things on very nice
scales—good publicity and very
attractive invitations and an-
nouncements.
Perhaps if we made these
young people feel needed in our
community it would give them
that little added attraction. Of
course I realize this would have
to be planned rather carefully,
and it would take a great deal
of planning, but it might work!

TV Christmas Places
Hanukah in Background

Editor, The Jewish News:
. . . There are constant dis-
cussions by parents and organ-
ized groups on the problems of
Christmas and Hanukah. We
are aware that Christmas pres
entations on television are nu-
merous and attractive. They are
also overwhelming to our chil-
ren.
Parents buy Hanukah pres
ents, they give gifts to their
children on each of the holiday
nights, they attend workshops
and learn how to decorate the
home, their children attend
Hanukah programs in the syna-
gogues and religious schools, but
obviously this is not enough.
This year, I noticed there was
only one television program in
commemoration of Hanukah.
One program is hardly suffi-
cient. Why doesn't the Jewish
community plan Many more
Hanukah programs?
In Detroit, there are individ-
uals and/or organizations who
could purchase television time
for programming. Surely, there
is local talent available for the
casts and direction of such pro-
grams. .
Programming consisting of
candle-lighting and Hanukah
songs does not fulfill the need.
There is a story of Hanukah
with action and pageantry, cos-
tume and beauty, music and
dance, and that is what we can
see and hear through the me-
dium of television.

The following statement was
released by Louis LaMed,
chairman, and Rabbi Jacob E.
Segal, co-chairman of the Cul-
tare Commission of the Jewish
Community Council in answer
to Mrs. Cohen's letter, a copy
of which was sent to Council:
The Jewish Community
Council has long maintained
that television and radio are
important media for the inter-
pretation of significant Jewish
customs and events for the
Jewish community as well as
our non-Jewish friends.
As noted in the letter, our
telecast "Candles of Freedom"
Was the subject of much fav-
orable comment by Jews and
non-Jews. Our other Hanukah
program, "The Words Will Not
Burn," was broadcast the same
day at 10 p.m. These are just
two of a total of 37 programs
which the Culture Commission
has aired since July, 1954.
If the sentiments expressed
in Mrs. Cohen's letter, with
which we are in accord, are
shared by more people, and if
the ideas can be implemented,
then it will have contributed
to the fostering of additional
and more highly qualitative
radio and television programs
which would add to the dignity
and integrity of Jewish com-
dm:anal' living 'in Detroit
