An impressive report of his
experiences in Israel was
brought here by Reyer Van
Zanen, a Fraser, Mich., lumber
merchant who previously was
introduced to the Zionist move-
ment by his friend, Pierre Van
Paasen.
Mr. Van Zanen was a familiar
figure at meetings addressed
here by Mr. Van Paassen. While
he has visited European coun'-
tries on five trips, this was his
first visit to Israel.
He reported his surprise at
finding land which had lain
barren for 2,000 years under
Arab rule now green and cov-
ered with citrus groves. Israel's
industry, which has developed
new cities out of the rubble of
yesteryear, "is a credit to the
people's ingenuity and hard
work," he said. -
Typifying the doggedness of
the Israelis, Van Zanen cited
the time he saw several villagers
digging for water. On their fifth
attempt, they struck, but it was
salt water. Calmly, he said, they
began digging anew.
A point which impressed Van
Zanen was Israel's law making
education compulsory. . His one •
big disappointment was in the
Holy City of Jerusalem where he
found "more faith in a bullet.
than in the Lord." -
"There is a great division of
faith in Jerusalem, and it is
there that the hostility of Arab
and Jew is most emphasized,"
he said.
Not a Jew, but interested in
Zionism for many years, Van
Zanen reports that nowhere in
all his travels "have I ever been
received so willingly or seen such
courtesy and good manners as
in Israel."

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Torrential
rains in the Negev filled to the
point of overflowing all water
impoundment dams in the des -
ert area, the Israel Water Plan-
ning Company announced.
•The Tel Yeruhan Dam, which
has a capacity of 500,000 cubic
, meters of water, was filled with-
in 90 minutes as swollen streams
rushed down from the hills and
emptied into the basin. Smaller
dams were filled- within shorter
periods and considerable water
was lost.
Negev farmers were jubilant
at the timing of the , rains, which
broke after the winter crops had
been sawed. Traffic was disrupt-
ed in some areas and several
cars full of students on a tour of
the Negev were forced to aban-
don their trip until the floods
had subsided.
