Withdraws Novel Branded Anti-Semitic GENEVA, (JTA) — The pub- lisher of a novel - attacked by the Jewish community and the Swiss press as anti-Semitic has agreed to withdraw it from cir- culation. The novel, "Amram Bela," by F. H. Acherman, tells the story of the son of a Jewish million- aire, and lays the blame of the world's ills on "Jewish free masonry" and the "Jewish con- spiracy." "Israelitisches Wochenblatt," Switzerland's chief Jewish week- ly, reports that the book's pub- Ohrenstein Appeal Fails; Court Backs One-Year Sentence MUNICH, (JTA) — Suspended Chief Rabbi of Bavaria Dr. Aron Ohrenstein was again sentenced to a one year prison term. at the .conclusion of his second trial here on charges of fraud in connection with certif- ication of claims of victims of Nazism. It is expected that Dr. Ohren- stein, who was granted a second trial after he appealed 'hes first conviction, will file a new ap- peal. On his second appeal, the Ger- man Supreme Court at Karls- ruhe upheld his first conviction, in 1952, but ordered a new trial because it did not agree with the sentence meted out to him. That sentence was one year in prison and a fine. The court here changed the earlier sentence only to the extent of omitting the fine. The court also refused to in- clude Dr. Ohrenstein in the general amnesty in effect • in Germany since early this year, asserting that the refusal was based on his "abuse of the rab- binical office." A number of other charges still hang over Dr. Ohrenstein. • Dr. Ohrenstein, a 45-year-old native of Poland, lived in Berlin before and during the early years of the Nazi regime. He has long been active in Jewish af- fairs. He has strenuously, and thus far successfully, fought off efforts by some communal quarters to separate him from his rabbinical post: Cemetery Memorials Lowest Prices for Highest Quality Granite and Outstanding Designs DETROIT MONUMENT WORKS 2744 W. Renew Winnipeg UJA Drive for '55 e WINNIPEG, (JTA) — United Jewish Appeal here has survived a threatening danger of dissolution because of finan- cial difficulties, and again will be in operation in 1955, officials announced. The year's extension is sub- ject to review of the campaign's results next year. The renewal of the appeal was made by the three partners— Jewish . Welfare Fund, Zionist Organization Mid-West Region (for United Israel Appeal) and Canadian Jewish Congress. As explained by officials, the UJA was not able to meet a Zionist Organizational annual minimum of $175,000 for the UJA, due to reduced campaign proceeds and increased costs of local institutions. Under the partnership arrangement with UJA, it is automatically dis- solved if the UIA does not get the $175,000 minimum.
