Plans Near Completion
For Rabbi Meisels Dinner

Arrangements are nearly com-
pleted for the testimonial din-
ner being given for Rabbi Chaim
Meisels at 6 p.m., Jan. 9, in the
Young Israel Center, is was an-
nounced this week by the dinner
comittee.
The banquet will celebrate the
fourth year since the arrival of
the Sarvasher Rebe and his
family in Detroit. Rabbi Hirsch
Meisels, brother of the honor
guest. will come here from Chi-
cago to be guest speaker.
Since arriving here, Rabbi
Chaim. Meisels has worked to-
ward furthering Torah teach-
ings along traditional Jewish
lines and has founded Cong.

He served for four and a half
years in the Israeli Cabinet, as
Minister of Welfare, and worked
closely with David Ben-Gurion,
Israel's first Prime Minister in
helping to place Israel on a solid
foundation.
At last summer's world con-
ference of Orthodox leaders in
Jerusalem, the Knessio Godolo,
Prime Minister Moshe Sharett
expressed great admiration for
Rabbi Lewin's work for Israel,
and stated that the Orthodox
leader would always be welcome
in the Israel Cabinet.

pected to hear Rabbi Lewin's

Detroiters Establish
Seminary Scholarships

Samuel Friedman, president
of Newburgh Steel Co., in De-
troit, is establishing an endowed
scholarship at the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary of America, it
was announced in New York by
Dr. Max Arzt, Seminary vice-
chancellor.
The $21,500 fund, to be known
as the Samuel Friedman Schol-
arship, will be used to help de-
fray the cost of educating and
maintaining one rabbinical stu-
dent during an academic year.
Previously, the Samuel and
Louis Hamburger Foundation
Scholarship was established by
the men after whom the en-
dowment was named, and the
Morris Adler and Abraham
Hershman Scholarship was
started by the Shaarey Zedek
Sisterhood.
The following additional
scholarships are now being es-
tablished: Louis Berry Family
Scholarship, by the Berry Foun-
dation; Safran. Scholarship, by
David and Hyman Safran; the
Arthur Fleischman Family
Foundation Scholarship, by Ar
thur Fleischman.

Several activities are planned
by Cong. Beth Abraham during
the week, highlighted by the
return to classes of students in
the religious school at 10 a.m.,
Sunday, following a week's va-
cation for Hanukah.
The Young Married Couples
Club will meet at 8:30 p.m., Jan.
9, in the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Marvin Berlin, 23641 Geneva,
Oak Park. Election ce officers
and a social program are plan-
ned. Jerome Vikser, chairman
pro-tem, will preside.
Joint installation ceremonies
of the Free Loan Association
and the First Galician Society
will be celebrated at a dinner
Sunday, at 2 p.m., in Horowitz
Catering.
Louis Ellenbogen will officiate
at the ceremony in which offi-
cers will receive their charge,
while Rabbi Israel I. Halpern
will be installing officers. Morris
Goldsmith will be toastmaster.
New officers of the Free Loan
Association are Morris Indianer,
president; Abraham Weintraub,
vice-president; Joseph Lenhard,
treasurer.
In the Galician Society, offi-
cers are Samuel Kaufer, presi-
dent; Jacob Muskovitz, vice-
president; Rubin Teicher, treas-
urer. Jacob Reifler is executive
secretary for both organizations.
T h e congregation's Men's
Club will hold its annual pro-
gram, "An Evening with
the
Rabbi," at 8:30 p.m., Thursday,
in the synagogue. Rabbi Israel
I. Halpern will serve as modera-
tor of a panel which will include
Rabbis Frank Rosenthal, Tem-
ple Emanu-El; Moses Lehrman,
Bnai Moshe; and Max Kapustin.
Wayne University. Hillel Foun-
dation.
The panelists will discuss
"Judaism in America These Past
300 Years—for the Record." Dr.
Robert Schlaff, Men's Club
president, will extend greetings.
