After 27 Years,
Wins MA Degree

MINNEAPOLIS, (JTA) - This
was a big week for Mrs. David
Aronson, wife of the Minneapo-
lis rabbi. It marked completion
of studies, begun 27 years ago,
which resulted in her receiving
a Master of Arts degree from
the College of Education of the
University of Minnesota.
Quite a few things happened
to Mrs. Aronson between her
graduation from the university
in 1925 and the conferment of
the master's degree this week.
There was the crowded calen-
dar of the wife of a distinguish-.
ed rabbi, there were the many
responsibilities of rearing two
sons, one now a physicist and
the other studying for the rab-
binate, and there were full-scale
careers of leadership both in
civic affairs and in the Jewish
community.
Among her recent assign-
ments were a three-year term as
president of the Minnesota Par-
ents-Teachers Association, and
duty as chairman of the nation-
al executives of the PTA.
A classmate of Bertha Aron-
son's was right when he taunt-
ed her 27 years ago that "you'll
get your 'Ma' degree long before
you get your MA." Now Mrs.
Aronson has both.

Javits Wants Israel
Included in NATO;
Honored By ZOA

NEW YORK, (JTA)-Repre-
sentative Jacob K. Javits, Attor-
ney General-elect of New York,
called for the active utilization
of the defense capability of Is-
rael for the security of the Mid-
dle East, and the inclusion of
Israel together with the Arab
states in a regional defense or-
ganization for the area within
the framework of the United
Nations. He spoke at a reception
tendered him by the Zionist Or-
gaization of America.
In his address Mr. Javits, who
during the day was President
Eisenhower's guest at luncheon
in the White House, declared
that the "current emphasis upon
defense arrangements with the
Arab states including military
assistance, which present serious
dangers to the security of the
Near East, is at the same time
apparently causing us to over-
look the strong defense capabili-
ty and strategic location of Is-
rael."
Dr. Emanuel Neumann, in be-
half of the officers and mem-
bership of the ZOA, presented a
scroll to Mr. Javits in tribute
to his "outstanding contribu-
tions to the future of Israel and
the Jewish people." He criticized
the pamphlet which was issued
a few days ago by the State De-
partment on its present policy
in the Middle East.

Toynbee Quotes Scriptures,
But Only When the Mood Hits

Historian Arnold J. Toynbee,
who in his latest works has dis-
counted Jewish contributions to
Society, finds it appropriate to
cite the Hebrew Scriptures when
it suits him.
In an article published in the
N.Y. Times last Sunday, Toyn-
bee cites from Deuteronomy:
" 'See, I have set before thee this
day Life and Good and Death
and E v i 1.' Yaweh's winged
words to Israel ought to be ring-
ing in our ears today-now that
the peoples of the world find
themselves standing within
point-blank range of one an-
other with deadly weapons in
their hands."

sotsky, chairman. Members and

tions should call Hyman Water-
