Symphony Salutes Tercentenary

Orchestra's Present Status

THE DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Paul Paray conducting,
whose program next Thursday will be dedicated to the American
Jewish Tercentenary, is real news in the music world today.
Reorganized in 1951 under the most favored of financial condi-
tions, the Detroit Symphony is now a mature and seasoned
instrument hailed conservatively as "one of the world's greatest"
by no less an authority than Leopold Stokowski.
Under the Detroit Plan 34 large organizations—business,
industry, banks, foundations, labor unions, associations, the City
government—joined with hundreds of smaller organizations and
individuals with three year pledges of sufficient size to build a
great orchestra. The governing board of the Detroit Symphony,
with representatives from all contributing sources, was built on
a truly democratic basis. It is a "working" board, playing an active
part in all matters pertaining to the orchestra.
Boasting first-chairmen like Mischa Mischakoff, Toscanini's
concertmaster for 15 years, this is one of the most powerful
conductor-orchestra combinations to be found anywhere.
At the Tercentenary concern next Thursday, the works of Aaron
Copland, Bloch, Webber and Mendelssohn are on the program.
Of special interest at this time is the fact that Mr. Copland
last week was one of four outstanding musicians who were elected
as new members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Mr. Copland was listed in the announcement as "widely recognized
today as the leading American composer." His orchestral works
include "First Symphony," "Lincoln Portraits" and "Concerto - for
Piano and Orchestra."
