In The Bag

Who will succeed Lipsky to the chairmanship of the American
Zionist Committee for Public Affairs? One of the strong potentials
is Dr. Emanuel Neumann. but it is doubtful a ZOA man can get
that post with a former ZOA president, Irving Miller, holding the
chairmanship of the American Zionist Council. The outcome may
be decided by a war of the sexes. Hadassah leadership is eyeing
the post and some say it is in a certain lady's bag.

Israel Laughs
A Jew in Israel gave his boy a painting set for a Hanukah gift.
The youngster immediately embarked on a surrealistic pattern
in the best of Picasso fashion. "What are you painting?" asked
the father. - "I am painting a picture of God," replied the lad.
'''You can't paint such a picture," insisted the father, "because no
one knows how God looks." The youngster hesitated for a moment
and then the right answer dawned upon him. "They will," he said,
"after seeing my painting."

'Israel and Health' in
Current Harofe Haivri

The current number of the
Hebrew Medical Journal (Harofe
Haivri), Volume 2, 1954, of which
Dr. Moses Einhorn, of New York,
is editor, concludes the 27th year
of publication. This volume con-
tains contributions in Hebrew
with ample summaries . in 'Eng-
lish which are of interest to the
physician and layman alike.
The section on "Israel and
Health" contains an article on
`Gerontology (Decline of life in
old age) with special reference
to -Israel," by Dr. Ch. Nitzany.
He points out that although in
Israel this problem seems to be
less disturbing at present, owing
to the fact that immigrants were
mostly young people, the situa-
tion is, however, rapidly chang-
ing in face of diminished immi-
gration. -
The section on "Medicine and
Religion" features an essay on
"Sterilization and Eugenics in
Jewish Law" by Rabbi I. Jakob-
ovits, the Chief Rabbi of Ireland.
A series of articles in the spe-
cial section on Maimonides
(Rambam) deals with his life
and outstanding contributions in
the fields of medicine and phiso-
phy. A biographical sketch on
Maimonides is contributed by
Dr. Moses Einhorn.
Dr. Leon Nemoy of Yale Uni-
versity , has an article on "Mai-
monides Opposition to Occult-
ism."
Dr. Jacob Rabin discusses-
"The Influence of Religion and
Philosophy upon Maimonides as
Physician."

Of the 22.000 Jews in the Scandinavian countries about 14.000
are domiciled in Sweden, but mixed marriage and assimilation
are taking a dreadful toll among the survivors of Nazism.
Divorces in Israel have been tapering off since 1949. The rate
in 1953 was 1.56 per 1,000 as against the high of 2.13 in 1950.
While the Israeli divorce rate is among the lowest in the world, the
marriage rate is higher than in most countries, 12 per 1,000 as
against seven per 1,000 elsewhere.
Since writing my piece about the Conservative rabbi's revision
of the ketubah, marriage contract, I have learned a good deal
about the subject from my readers. One reader reminds me that
the dictum against altering the ketubah was adopted by sages in
Canfia in 1489 but that in later years, in countries where polygamy
was practiced, the ketubah was made to contain a clause pro-
hibiting husbands from taking on added spouses. Often husbands
would be asked to stipulate not to leave the country for distant
Places or to insist on wife moving along with him to distant lands.
In Kurdistan and Persia the ketubah contained a clause that
in the event the husband was proselyted to another the wedding
contract would be null and void, with the wife having the right
to remarry. The deviations. my readers pointed out, show that

Mendes-France. whose scintillating ascension to the very
height of the political ladder in France is a modern miracle, has
no record of active participation in Jewish affairs. However,
among the letters cherished by Vera Weizmann, widow of Israel's
first President, is one from Mendes-France to Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann congratulating him an his elevation to the presidency.
Mendes-France at the time was still a comparatively obscure figure
on the French political scene. Dr. Weizmann at the time was in
Switzerland, and later in Paris,- recuperating from illness. When
word flashed of the Weizmann story, the future Premier of France
hastened to desk and penned a warm greeting, calling the rise of
Israel the fulfillment of Dr. Weizmann's personal dream and
prophecy.

Cotton, one of Israel's newest crops, is being picked by a Yem-
enite immigrant at Shmuel Farm in the Beisan Valley. These im-
migrant farming activities are financed in the Jewish state by the
United Israel Appeal, major beneficiary of the United Jewish Ap-

Christmas in Schools OK
Says New York Educator

NEW YORK, (AJP) — N e w
York City School Superinten-
dent. Dr. William Jansen, told a •
panel of editors over a local
radio station that commemora-
tion of Christmas in public
schools through special fetes is
worthwhile, despite the country's
law on separation of Church

and State.

He strongly opposed the chal-
lenge put forth by Rabbi Samuel
Silver, editor of American Juda-
ism, and Dr. Joseph Kaminetzky,
editor of The Jewish Parent,.
that such commemoration is an
infringement upon the Constitu-
tion and the Bill of Rights and
that the introduction of any
phase of religion into the public
schools is tantamount to coer-
cion.

SLEEP 1104U--

Our Letter Box

Which Proves the Point
Editor, The Jewish News:
In reference to the Dec. 10
Commentary, captioned " D r .
Sachar's 'Guest' Argument," we
must bear in mind that a num-
ber of institutions of higher
learning still evince a discrimin-
atory attitude.
We can't be blind to the dero-
gatory and humiliating connota-
tions of "numerus clausus" and
"numerus nullus." In trying to
efface such tendencies diploma-
tically, will never tend towards
their total elimination, and they
are still with us as unwholesome
tendencies of existing conditions.
—N. E. ARONSTAM, M.D.

Editor's note: If we accept the
"Guest" attitude, we condone
rather than fight the "numer-
us clausus." OUR position is that
we must reject any attempt, any-
where, at any time, to brand us
as guests in a public activity in
a free country. Dr. Aronstam
merely proves our point.
