Danny Raskin's

LISTENING

HENNY YOUNGMAN came to
Detroit, last week, to appear on
the show given by United
Dairies at Latin Quarter . .
and to visit Aunt Jennie and
Uncle Max Chetkin and cousin
Harriet . . . He was only able to
stay a day . . . Known as the
comedian's comedian, his antics
are always appreciated because
no effort is ever attempted at
abusing anyone . . . While doing
a show, Henny goes through his
routines with the ease and
agility of a young girl chewing
gum and skipping rope at the
same time.
HENNY IS ANYTHING but a
blushing violet . • . He's entirely
sure of himself in a naive, uns
spoiled way that makes you like
him on or off the stage . . A
eompl et e sentimentalist, his
friends say he's a sucker for a
sob story and big-hearted as
they come . . There was the
time some years ago when he
was playing in Fort Wayne, Ind.,
and was stricken with a ruptured
appendix which just missed be-
ing his final curtain . . A few
of his friends got up a benefit
performance to help pay the
hospital bills . . . Some actors
playing in Chicago made the trip
to Fort Wayne to help out . . .
Just the idea that these people
would rally around to help him
did as much as—anything in
bolstering his spirits and pulling
him through ... That's why he
does so many benefits . . . He
never turns down a request if
he can make it.
HENNY EXPLAINS the way he
works . . "I've got a formula.
I do some talk. I read some fun-
ny telegrams. Then I play the
fiddle. But I stop every four bars
and either heckle myself or give
a fast quip. I can do it better
myself than having a stooge.
The formula—that's the thing."
BENNY'S GREAT popularity
around the country is one of
those fabulous tales of success
that came after years of trying
. . He's still a kid having a lot
of fun . . But he's been doing
his stuff since he was 14 years
old.
BENNY'S WIFE, Sadie, about
whom he likes to revolve jokes
. • . such as, "Now take my wife
—please!" or "My wife wanted
a mink outfit so I bought her a
rifle and a trap" or "My wife is
very outspoken, but I don't
know by whom!" . . lives in
New York with their two chil-
dren, Marilynn, 20, and Gary, 14
. He phones his family just
about every day
. regardless
of where he is at.
* *
ON THE SAME SHOW with
Benny, last week in Detroit, were
the Barton Brothers, Eddie and
Murray, of "Joe and Paul" and
"Bagels and Yox" fame . . A
couple of swell fellows, they'll
soon be coming out with their
new record . . The disc, ready
for release, is called "Mambo
Moishe."
