U Detroit Youth. Schedule Two Programs to Mark Tercentenary Celebration Of U.S. Jewish Community The Shin, the twenty-first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, whose numerical value is 300. Looking Forward and Back on Tercentenary As Were Our Ancestors, We, Too, Are Pioneers Greetings on your 300th American anniversary! An anni- versary is not only an occasion for celebration, but also a time to look back and recall some of the happy and worthy events which have made this year a cause for rejoicing. The twenty-three Jews who landed in New Amsterdam were the pioneers of the Jewish People in America. All Americans are grateful to the Mayflower pilgrims, who arrived at Plymouth Rock in 1620. They opened the door of America for millions of other people "o were to come here looking for freedom' and opportunity. We, the Jews of America, are grateful to the Jewish pioneers who came on the ship, St. Charles, and landed in New Amsterdam, now New York, They opened the door of America for all the Jews who now live in the United States. We recall with joy the contributions that our ances- tors made to the growth and development of America. We look back with satisfaction at their achievements in behalf of Judaism —the building of synagogues, the establishment of Jewish Schools, the writing of great literary masterpieces in Hebrew, Yiddish and English, the concern they had for their fellow men and the interest they displayed in the fate of Jews in Europe, Africa and particularly Israel. We admire their courage and cherish those worthy ideals they developed, fostered and realized. Because we are happy to be living in America—a land of liberty and justice for all—therefore, we shall always recall with joy, the story of the pioneers of 1654. This is why we are cele- brating so colorfully this Tercentenary year of 1954, the 300th anniversary of the landing of our Jewish pioneers. An anniversary, however ; does not look backward but also forward. It includes not only memories of the past, but also plans for the future. Let us, therefore, employ these 300 years of American Jewish history as guideposts for the future and let us hope that we, too, will meet OUR responsibilities with the same courage, determination, and zeal of our ancestors. However, we must not think that pioneering ended in 1654. We, the American Jews of 1954, are also pioneers. We helped build the State of Israel, and everything we do to help build up our religious schools, and our congregations, and all our organ- izations for Jewish education, is pioneering work for the future. On birthdays everyone usually makes a wish. We know, of course, that in order for wishes to come true, one must plan, work and strive for their fulfillment. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Let us so work and build that future generations will be as happy and thankful over our efforts, as we are thankful for the courage and the labors of the Jews who were the first of our faith to set foot on the soil of North America in 1654.
