JWV Service Officer's File
Shows Heart of Organization

In the office of Roland Gottes-
man at the Jewish War Veterans
Memorial Home is a huge file
marked "private." Its contents
are confidential.
Gottesman, as service officer
of JWV in Michigan, is responsi-
ble for all the names in the file.
Some are members, others are
not, but they get the same care
regardless of race, creed or color.
The JWV service program em-
braces a multitude of veteran
aids, such as direct medical help
to the veteran or his family,
fighting for individual GI rights
or any number of other possible
benefits to which veterans of all
American wars are entitled.
Probably the best way to il-
lustrate Gottesman's task is by
simply telling a few of his in-
teresting cases:
A veteran of World War I,
born in Ahmut, Lebanon, en-
tered the army at 38, listing
himself, however, as only 28.
At present, he is 72 and total-
ly incapacitated as far as
employment.
Through JWV's service officer,
a claim was filed through the
Veterans Administration. In the
meantime, affidavits had to be
filed proving his age, and his
birth certificate was sought.
The certificate came, written
In Lebanese, and was translated
by the Labenese Foreign Min-
istry in Chicago, which made a
transcription. Result: this vet-
