Has Oak Porkers Buzzing

By the Oak-Woodser

It was a burden to the mail-
man on the route, but Oak Park-
ers last week enjoyed thumbing
through an attractive pam-
phlet sent out by the city under
the title of "Annual Rel>ort of
1953-1954."
A number of rather astound-
ing tidbits of information were
listed, top among which was an
item which showed the city's
population increase from April,
1952 to July 1, 1954, at a whop-
ping 312 percent.
To explain the jump in popu-
lation. the booklet reports that
6,558 building permits were is- •
sued since 1951. The revenue
from these permits for just the
first seven months of this year
totalled $15,321,023.
And people, alone, have not
constituted the only rise in pop-
ulation. The increase in dog life
has been so vast that it was
necessary to hire a dog warden.
This gentleman has been kept
busy picking up 159 dogs. An-
other figure, however, has us
concerned.
The booklet shows that he
also has picked up 71 other ani-
mals, and, being located less
than a mile from the zoo, we
sure would like a further break-
down.
One source of income, we
note, is the Justice Court,
which handed out fines of
$20,685 during the year. With-
out us, the figure would have
shrunk to a paultry $20,680,
the result of sliding through a
stop street one miserable day
last winter.
insurance companies
Fire
should take note of this report,
and give Oak Parkers lower
rates. According to the figures
of that department, 128 alarms
were answered during the year,

Rabbi Yaakov I. Homnick, of
the Y a u n g Israel Center of
Oak-Woods, announces that a
series of Hanukah activities for

have recently t sed Hebrew
school. The inauguration service
will feature the monthly service
and Oneg Shabbat, Friday, Dec
24, 8:30 p.m. Each child will be
presented with a gift.
A pre-Hanukah rally and
children's presentation will be
held Sunday, 10 a.m: A play.
"Hanukah Prelude," will be
staged by the children.
Tuesday, the youth group of
the Center is sponsoring a Han-
ukah party. Don Klein has

with only $4,700 in damage to
buildings.
Among the common causes of
fires were careless burning of
rubbish, defective oil burners •
and defective wiring and appli-
ances.
What has added to the suc-
cess of Oak Park's increase in
population is the accompanying
development of city depart-
ments and facilities. One of this
year's major accomplishments,
for instance, was the formula-
tion of a year-round recreation
program.
A paragraph in the report ex-
plains that during the summer
a program sponsored jointly by
the city and school boards had
a cumulative attendance of over
30,000. A full-time Recreation
Director has been employed to
expand its activities.

In an address before a large
audience at Cong. Adas Shalom,
Dec. 8, in which she outlined the
origin and continuing democra-
tic activities of the American
Jewish Congress, Judge Justine
Wise Polier, of New York, na-
tional vice-president of the Jew-
ish Congress Women's Division,
attacked the activities of Ben-
jamin Schultz, who is touring
the country in defense of Sena-
tor McCarthy.
"It is an insult to bring to any
community men who revive the
hate movements of the days of
Hitler•" Judge Polier declared.
She charged that Rabbi Schultz,
by representing the hate and
McCarthy movements, is render-
ing a disservice to America.
Judge Polier expressed t h e
hope that the Bnai Brith and
, the American Jewish Committee
will return to the National Com-
munity Relations Advisory
Council.
She expressed the view, in
answer to those who criticized
the discussion of Israel's position
during the last election, that
