convention have come to be
known as the "Three E's," stand-
ing for Education (adult studies),
Exaltation (worship) , and Ethics

The Rabbis long ago stated in
the Rabbinic literature that the
Torah has given permission to
the physicians to heal. The Re-
. spOnsa literature contains a
number of questions and an-
, swers relating to doctors. Among
them are questions such as
whether a doctor may ride in a
carriage or ferry boat to admin-
ister to a patient. Some author-
ities decided these questions in
the affirmative. The Talmud
literature has many references
'to medical science. Some of the
best known of the Rabbis in the
Talitudic and post-Talmudic
era were known to have prac-
ticed some type of medicine such
as the Am.ora Samuel and the
codifier Maimonodies. In some
instances the motives of doc-
tors were questioned, much as
the motives of many scientific
statements could have been
questioned. In many eases the
authority of medical men is still
accepted as a basis for a Rabbi-
nic ruling on certain Halachic
questions.
