Tercentenary Committee Urges
Honor John Sodos
80th Birthday at
Dinner on Sunday
Parties for Symphony Concert
A call is being issued to the entire community, by
the Detroit Committee of 300 for the American Jewish
Tercentenary, to join in celebrating New. Year's Eve a
day earlier, by attending the Detroit Symphony Orches-
tra concert, dedicated to the Tercentenary, on Dec. 30,
and by arranging parties after the concert, at midnight
that Thursday, in order to avoid desecrating the Sab-
bath by celebrating New Year's Eve on Friday night.
In behalf of the local Tercentenary Committee,
Philip Slomovitz, chairman, and the chairman of the
music committee, Morris L. Schaver, urge Detroit Jews
to buy Symphony concert tickets for themselves and
their friends for Dec. 30 for such celebrations.
Reservations for the Dec. 30 concert are now being
accepted at the Masonic Temple.
Recognizing his 30 years' ef-
forts in Detroit in behalf of
many Jewish causes, the Detroit

`Don't Desecrate Sabbath,' Bnai Brith Urges
WASHINGTON, D. C.—Since New Year's Eve oc-
curs on a Friday evening this year, Bnai Brith reiterated
its fixed policy regarding the sanctity of the Sabbath
in a statement issued to its 1600 lodges and chapters
throughout the United States and Canada. The Bnai
Brith statement requoted a policy resolution of an Ex-
ecutive Committee meeting in February 1953, which
reads as follows: "No unsuitable affair should be held
on a Jewish holiday, and the Sabbath should never
be violated in any way by a Bnai Brith function."
The Bnai Brith Women adopted a similar resolu-
tion, urging its members to limit Sabbath functions to
Oneg Shabbats.
Rabbinical groups in many cities have issued ap-
peals to maintain the sanctity of the Sabbath_ by not
arranging or sponsoring any public celebrations on
New Year's Eve.
