Detroit artist who had been
given his first lessons and in-
spiration by Cohen.—Loan of
the Detroit Institute of Arts.

WILLIAM BARCLAY
This typical portrait by Fred-
erick E. Cohen was painted in
1847 showing William Barclay
in his uniform as chief of the
Detroit Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment. It was given by the De-
troit Fire Department to the De-
troit Historical MuSeum in 1953.

young violinist, will be soloist
with the Jewish Community
Center Symphony Orchestra,
Julius Chajes, conductor, on Dec.
14, at the Davison branch of the
Center. He will --
be heard in a
performance of
the Brahms Vio-
lin. Concerto.
Mr. Gimpel,
an American
Army Air Force
veteran, first
gained renown
in Europe. A
pupil of Carl
Flesch in Berlin
and Robert Po- B. Gimpel
lak in Vienna, he made his debut
as a boy prodigy with the Vienna
Symphony Orchestra. Since
coming to the United States in
1937, he has been soloist under
such conductors as Bruno Wal-
ter, John Barbirolli, Otto Klem-
perer, William Steinberg and
others. A year ago Mr. Gimpel
scored a great success in a per-
formance of Beethoven's Violin
Concerto with the Center Sym-
phony.
Mr. Gimpel just returned from
a concert tour of Europe and
South America.
The program will also include
Mozart's "Linz," a rarely per-
formed symphony, and the first
Detroit performance of Julius
Chajes' Suite in Mode Contra-
punctice for Strings. Mr. Chajes
conducted the latter work a few
months ago in Vienna, Austria.

3,000 Immigrants Arrived
In Israel in November

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Some
3,000 immigrants arrived in Is-
rael during November. Five Jews
from the Soviet Union arrived
from Vienna this week.
