Leonard N. Simons 1\kt-fled On National NCO Board Anti-Semites Seek to Cash In On Sen. McCarthv Sentiment Anti- NEW YORK, (JTA) Semitic elements throughout the United States have openly ranged themselves behind Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, of Wiscon- sin and made his cause their Sown. Professional Jew-baiters who took leading positions in the or- ganizations which mushroomed into existence to defend the Wisconsin senator against cen- sure charges, are working to convert pro-McCarthy sentiment into active anti-Jewish manifes- tations. They are campaigning to con- wince McCarthy supporters that "Jewish-Communist conspir- acy" is responsible for criticism of their hero and that the Jew is their real enemy. Senator Herbert H. Lehman, staunch defender of civil rights and one of the most eloquent critics of McCarthy, is a prin- cipal target of the vitupera- tion of these elements. While a handful of leading anti-Semites held top positions M the so-called "Ten Million Americans Mobilizing for Jus- tice"—the group which conduct- ed the pro-McCarthy petition drive—hundreds of lesser anti- Semitic luminaries were active in the distribution of the peti- tions and active solicitation of signatures. At the Hotel Roosevelt head- quarters of the committee, vet- eran reporters noted the pres- ence of many men whom they had seen previously in the Nazi Bundist, Coughlini te, Silver Shirt and other fascist group- ings of other days. In many areas. solicitation of signatures to the pro-McCarthy petitions eras accompanied by anti-Jewish manifestations. Spectators at the commit- tee's Madison Square Garden rally were appalled by the vio- lence of the open anti-Semit- ism displayed by the crowd, large segments of which acted as though the meeting were an anti-Jewish demonstration .rather than a pro-McCarthy rally. The anti-Jewish baying of the crowd was only halted momentarily when a Jew, Roy Cohn, addressed the meeting and when a Los Angeles rabbi delivered the blessing. The "Christian Nationalist Crusade." organization headed by Gerald L. K. Smith, an active figure in the McCarthy camp, openly entered the picture dur- trig the final week of the Senate censure debate. It sent a series of warnings to every member of the Senate warning that politi- • cal suicide faced every Senator who voted for censure. All Senators were deluged in ▪ carefully organized • letter- campaign supporting McCarthy. Many of the letters were so vio- lently abusive and so vicious in their diatribes on the Jews that one of the most respected mem- bers of the Senate told a JTA correspondent that he was ap- palled and horrified. Sen. J. William Fulbright, of Arkansas, read a section of these letters into the record during the debate. One letter, signed G. G. Gurley, president of the Chemical Attraction Oil Corp., of San Antonio, Tex., denounced the senator as "a henchman of the Jew deal." Sen. Lehman," he added "should be deported out of this nation to Russia to let' Square Dance Slated By Hadassah Teenagers Hadassah Teenagers will stage its first annual square dance from 9 to 12 p.m., Dec. 18, at Cong. DETROIT JEWISH NEWS---=-11- Friday, Deeenthet 1& 1954 Germany take that 'bird° in and give him the gas like Hit- ler did as per my opinion of his record." Another letter, this one anon- ymous, asserted that the writer had not fought in the South Pacific "to open the gates of this nation for the commy Jews that Hitler did not kill." A letter signed Peter Murphy, of Buffalo, N.Y., referred to "the rotten Jew, Herbert Lehman, the pal of Hiss." A letter.from Cad- illac, Mich., referred to "the rich Jews" in America who were "fi- nancing the Reds in Russia.", In reading the letters to the Senate, Mr. Fulbright noted that whereas formerly criticism was based on legitimate differences of opinion, its character, of late, had changed dangerously. "It is no longer criticism," he warned. "It is unadulterated hate, vituperation and abuse . . The junior senator from Wis- consin, by his reckless charges, has so preyed upon the fears of uninformed and credulous peo- ple that he has started a prairie fire, which neither he nor any- one else may be able to control. lt Leonard N. Simons, prominent Detroit advertising executive, has been named a member of the national hoard of the Na- tional Conference of Jews and Christians. Mr. Simons recently also was named a member of the State of Michigan Governor's St. "aw- 1 rence Seaway Commission. .i CONGRATULATIONS and BEST WISHES TO LEINOFF'S DELICATESSEN ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR It affords us great pleasure • to join their many friends in paying compliment to them.
