' TEL AVIV, (JTA) - Former Premier David Ben-GUrion of- ficiated at the beginning of drilling operations for the fifth oil well in Israel this week-end, and pushed the button which started operation of the drill at a well being dug north of Sdeh Boker, Ben-Gurion's home. The well is being sunk by the Israel-American Oil Corporation, a subsidiary of the Husky Oil Company of Wyoming. Mark Emanu-El Founding NEW YORK, (JTA)-The 110th anniversary of the founding of the Congregation of Temple Emanu-El was marked with a program of religious and musi- cal activitteS. Friday, December 10, 1954 • No Change owat d ' Jews in Africa Under Strydom JOHANNESBURG, (JTA)-No change in attitude by the Na- tionalist Government toward the Jewish community of South Africa is anticipated as a result of the dramatic choice of 61- year-old Johannes G. Strydom to succeed Dr. Daniel F. Malan as head of the party and Pre- mier of the Union. During their six years in of- fice, the Nationalists have dem- onstrated that they have de- cisively. turned their back on the World War II period when they were critical of 'the Jewish community, and tread the same path of friendship to the Jewish community as every other South African Government has done. Mr. Strydom is not different from other members of the Malan Cabinet in this respect. In fact, it was he who first an- nounced that the Nationalists then . in opposition to the Field Marshall Jan Christian Smuts gofernment - would recognize j the newly established State of ! Israel if the party were voted into power. That was in 1948 before the general election and before the general election and before 1Marshal Smuts granted Israel de ifacto recognition. Some observ- ers belieVe that Mr. Strydom's : announcement forced Marshall Smuts' recognition on the eve of •the electiOn. The Nationalists, ; voted into office in that election, converted the de facto recogni- tion to de jure and from the !commencement of their regime ! followed the previous adminis- tration's policy of friendship and aid to the JewiSh • National Homeland. Informed Circles say that : when the Transvaal Nationalist Party in September, 1951, drop- ! ped its wartime ban against Jews being accepted as members- ! of the provincial division of the party, Mr. Strydom was largely responsible for. the decision. At last year's celebration of Israel Independence Day at the Israel Legation at Pretoria, Mr. Strydom proposed the toast to Israel, on behalf of the Union Government. Mr. Strydom has always received withcourtesy all 'Jews who have had official busi- ness with him, and it is antici- pated here that this attitude,. will : prevail in his dealings with the Jewish community. The South African Jewish Board of Deputies and the Zion- ist Federation sent messages of b good wishes to Dr. Daniel D./Ialan. - Both organizations expressed their appreciation of his per- sonal and his government's friendship for the State of Is- rael. The Zionists noted parti- cularly that Dr. Malan was the first foreign Premier to visit Israel. Urge France to Guarantee Protection in North Africa • WASHINGTON, (JTA) - A statement suggesting that France should be co-guarantor, together with the two local gov- ernments, of any human rights conventions agreed upon for ! Tunisia and Morocco was pre- : sented to the State Department and the French Ambassador in the United States by a delega- tion of the American Jewish Committee. The delegation pointed out that the 220,000 Jews 'in Mo- rocco are still classes as "dhim- mis,” with no rights as citizens. Seek Naming of Square In Amsterdam for Spinoza AMSTERDAM, (JTA)-A num- ber of leading non-Jews in this city addressed a request to the city council to 'name a square in the newly-rebuilt center of the city for Baruch Spinoza, famed Dutch Jewish philosopher. The petition says that naming the street for Spinoza would be a fitting • tribute to the 100,000 Mitch Jews deported and mur- dered by the Nazis.
