Evergreen Expansion

Dec. 10 has been designated
by Women's American ORT as
its annual ORT Sabbath. Locally,
members of ORT (Organization
for Rehabilitation through
Training) will hold services at
8:30 pan., in Temple Israel.
Over 35,000 members of Worn-
en's American ORT and an addi-
tional 100,000 members and
friends of the affiliated groups
of the American ORT Federation
in the United States will parti-
cipate in services throughout the
nation.
Dr. Leon Fram, as will other
spiritual leaders in the U.S., Will
dedicate his sermon to the work
of the organization, which re-
habilitates hundreds of thou-
sands of Jews throughout the
world.
ORT, now entering its 75th
year of continuous service as the
vocational training agency of
the Jewish people, has prepared
three generations of Jews in
dozens of countries for useful
and dignified lives.
Currently, ORT's operational
program comprises a network of
over 300 vocational training in-
stallations in 19 countries, locat-
ed on five continents. Presently.
18,000 students are learning bet-
ter than 100 different skills.

Members of the Detroit Chap-
ter of Hadassah will worship to-
gether at a special service, to be
known as Hadassah Sabbath, at
8:30 p.m., Dec. 17, in Temple Is-
rael.

the late founder of Hadassah,
Henrietta Szold.

Attention of Young Israel of
Detroit will focus this year on
the Evegreen area, announces
Rabbi Samuel H. Prero, spiritual
leader and director of the na-
tional movement.
The policy, he added, is in
keeping with Young Israel's pro-
gram of, organizing branches in
the suburbs and distant areas
of the city. Rabbi Prero, in mak-
ing the announcement, urged
the cooperation of members of
the Dexter and Oak-Woods
YOung Israel centers in forming
another center in the Evergreen-
Seven Mile section.
The midwest convention of
Young Israel branches in De-
troit, Cincinnati, Cleveland, St.
Louis and Chicago will be held
Dec. 31 to Jan. 2, in Cleveland.
The topic for the oratorical con-
test, open to all boys and girls,
14 to 17, is "What Is. Young
Israel's Unique Contribution to
Jewish Life in America?"

Albert Burke, president of
Cong. Ahavas Achim, this week
announced the appointment of
Isadore Leemon, past president
of the congregation, as chair-
man of the cornerstone laying
ceremony of the new Cambridge
Synagogue. -
Adjoining the present syna-
gogue, at 19190 Schaefer, the
Cambridge addition will be in-
augurated with cornerstone cere-
at 2 p.m., Dec. 12, with a brief
service inside the present chapel,
followed by the .actual corner-
' stone program.
Featured will be Cantor Lie-
bele Waldman, known as one of
the leading interpretors of Jew-
ish liturgy in the country.
Speakers will include Rabbis
Benjamin H. Gorrelick and Ja-
cob E. Segal and representatives
from the Detroit Council of
Churches and United Hebrew
Schools.
Rabbi Jacob Chinitz, spiritual
leader of COng. Ahavas Achim,
and Cantor Mendel Stawis also
will participate.
Cantor Waldman will officiate
at sabbath services on Dec. 10
and 11, as the congregation ob-
serves the festivities as "Ahavas
Achim Weekend." The commu-
nity is invited to attend all

Climaxing the corner stone
ceremony, Cantor Waldman will
present a concert of popular
favorites in Yiddish and Hebrew
at 8 p.m., Dec. 12. Admission is
by ticket which may be pur-
chased at the synagogue.
The congregation's monthly
meeting is scheduled for 8:30
p.m., Monday, in the social hall,
when reports on the cornerstone
ceremony, Bar Mitzvah Club,
Junior Congregation, Sisterhood
Hebrew class and choir will be
heard.
Guest speakers will be Rabbi
Milton Arm, whose subject will
be "You and the Synagogue."

A stag night program has been
scheduled by the Young Mar-
rieds Group of Temple Israel
for 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the
temple's youth hall.
Paul "Dizzy" Trout, former
pitching ace of the Detroit Tiger
baseball club and now a com-
mentator on all Tiger ball
games, will speak to the men.
Addressing the women will be
Valerie Stevens, interior design-
er, who will offer advice on home
furnishings. Question and ans-
wer periods will follow the talks.
