RIDE THE D.S.R. FOR CONVENIENCE SAFETY AND ECONOMY

Through the courtesy of the D.S.R. and the Transportation Co., this poster has been placed
-in 2,000 buses and street cars. Arrangements for this service were made by Leon Wayburn,
chairman of the public relations committee of the Do*troit Committee of 300 for the Ameri-
can Jewish Tercentenary. The Tercentenary Exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum will
continue for another six weeks.

The incident is viewed seri-
ously here because it is the first
eruption of violence on this
scale along the border in sev-
eral months. The Legionnaires,
1who penetrated several hundred
I yards inside Israel, were repulsed
'by an Israel police patrol which
they attempted to attack. Only
I one Israeli was wounded.

Laughter and Tears in the Israeli Courts

Eminent Jurist Delights Audience Here With
Human Interest Stories About the New State

One of Israel's most distin-
guished personalities who visited
this area to address the law
Schools of Michigan--Justice M.
Zalman Cheshin, Deputy Presi-
dent of the Supreme Court of
Israel. delighted all who heard
him, Jews and non-Jews, with
his humor and delineations of
human interest developments in
Israel.
. Justice Cheshin, during his
six-clay stay in Michigan, ad-
dressed the law schools of
Wayne - University, University of
Detroit and the University of
Michigan and the Detroit Col-
lege of Law.
Many hundreds of students
and faculty members of these
schools heard him describe the
methods of administration of
law in Israel.
Meeting here, at the Beth
•Aaron, with about 200 Jewish
leaders in the local Zionist and
other movements, Justice Chesh-
in described the difficulties un-
der which the State of Israel is
functioning today. But he was
optimistic. "All we need," he
said, "is a few years of Peace
and tranquility, and no effort
will be spared to make Israel
the bastion of democracy in the
ontire Middle East."
Justice Cheshin, a native of
Jerusalem, author of important
books in Hebrew, a strong advo-
cate of universal acquisition of
Hebrew by Jewish communities
everywhere, proved a master of
English and a charming story-
teller. He resorted to frequent
quotations from Yiddish folk-
lore and reference to statements
kit Yiddish in the courts of Is-
rael. His factual analysis of the
problems of Israel's courts,
tinged with anecdotes, resulted
Iii one of the most interesting
evenings created by an Israeli's
genius.
In his description of the diffi-
culties encountered in Israel by
the courts, Justice Cheshin de-
scribed the obstacles created by
the need of many interpreters,
the problems created by need
for translations, the complica-
tions in coining new words and
the different sources of law in-
herited by the new state.
There are no words in. Hebrew
for many of the legal terms, he
pointed out, and the judges,
while writing opinions, must go
be the Scriptures for roots of
new words - •they must create
while handing down opinions.
Many humorous incidents
Were reported by Justice Chesh-
In his review of the manner
to which the newcomers from
more than two score communi-
ties throughout the world,
speaking different languages,
are helped to become integrated
Into the new economy.
Justice Cheshin took occasion

to point to the injustice of arm-
ing the Arab states. He said
that the western powers there-
by help create a war threat
against Israel.
Holding judicial positions
since 1937 when he first was
named a Magistrate by the Brit-
ish. Justice Cheshin is held in
high esteem by jurists through-
out the Middle East. He received
his legal training at the New
York University Law School.

The meeting at the Beth
Aaron was arranged by the
Joint Committee of the Zionist
and Jewish Ccammunity Council
whose c h a i r m e n, Irving W.
Schlussel and Sidney Shevits,
briefly greeted the distinguished
guest. Both pointed to the his-
toric importance of the day on
which Justice Cheshin spoke--
November 29, the seventh anni-
versary of the United Nations
Palestine Partition Decision.
