A ga i nst Gutter Level Campa i gn B i gotry elected to the Circuit Court

The Michigan Fair Election
Practices Committee which has
been, appointed by both candi-
dates for Governor, has issued a
statement reaffirming the prin-
ciples which govern our democ-
racy "even in the heat of a
political contest."
This committee is headed by
the Rt. R.ev. Richard E. Enrich.
Committee members include
Rabbi Morris Adler and Sidney
M. Shevitz.
The fair election statement
asserts:
"Political campaigns can and
should dramatize the historic
spirit of America. Vigorous,
hard-hitting, yet never making
the religion or race of an op-
ponent an issue in the political
struggle. A campaign is, how-
ever, more than a battle fon l
political position. It is a vast
opportunity for the education of
our people in the important is-
sues of our contemporary life.
"American citizens committed
to the ideal of fair play will, we
feel sure, resent an attack on
any candidate, whether in an
open speech or through insidious
whispering, based upon his
church affiliation or color. The
committee appointed by both
Gubernatorial candidates will
unhesitatingly issue a public
condemnation of the individual
or group stooping to the gutter
level of bigotry and religious
prejudice."
