It's Your City of Hoa e
This free non-sectarian National Medical Center for healing,
research, and medical education in dread diseases is yours . .
It's an institution founded on FAITH—FAITH IN YOU—faith in
the premise that "man is his brother's keeper," ever ready' to
give him a helping _ hand to health and life and security.
At the turn of the century, men and women, stricken with
tuberculosis, fled congested cities throughout the land and sought
a cure in the plentiful sunshine of California. To aid these
unfortunates, in 1913 a small group of selfless individuals set up
two tents in the desert at the foothills of the Sierra Madre
Mountains.
These pioneers gave generously of themselves and their re-
sources to an idea and an ideal—to provide a haVen of healing
where victims of the "white plague," without sacrificing self-
respect or dignity, could be given a new chance for life.
These two tents became a CITY. On seventy-five beautifully
landscaped acres proudly stand hospital buildings equipped with
the most modern, scientific apparatus available—triumphant testi-
mony to the goodness of man. All this has been made possible
by a network of supporting organizations of the CITY OF HOPE
energetically raising funds for its work and democratically de-
termining its policies—co-sharers in a great humanitarian under-
taking.
The CITY OF HOPE is devoted to a three-pronged frontal
assault on specific diseases—Cancer, Leukemia, Hodgkin's Disease,
Tuberculosis, and Heart Ailment amenable to surgery.
In its hospital, the CITY. OF HOPE places its specialized skills
at the disposal of patients who cannot take advantage of medical
resources in their own communities. The latest techniques and
methods are employed, including the. Cobalt Bomb X-Ray Therapy
Unit. .
In• its Research Institute, original inquiry into the cause and
of catastrophic diseases is conducted by full staff of re-
search specialists and technicians of the highest caliber. The
experimentation carried on in these laboratories seeks to forestall
the mass fatalities involved in these illnesses.
In its doctor's training facilities, medical men from various
parts of the country, as well as abroad, are given the opportunity
to study the care and treatment of major diseases. Furthermore
to reach a wider audience, a quarterly Medical Journal is pub-
lished, making available to all doctors the developments in the
hospital, laboratories, and lecture rooms of the CITY OF HOPE.
The CITY OF HOPE is unique. Unlike other medical centers
in the world, the CITY OF HOPE gives its complete service and
offers all of its facilities before, during, and after hospitalization
without charge.
Treatment is administered to patients with a full regard to
human dignity, for personalization rather than institutionaliza-
tion is the keynote of care at the CITY OF HOPE. Basic to the
operation of the CITY OF HOPE is the philosophy that there is
no profit in saving the body, if in the process we destroy the soul.
Disease can waste away the 'soul, as surely as it wastes away the
body—if the patient suffers unnecessary mental anguish. Every
patient is made to feel that he is a welcome guest. Nothing is
spared to make him comfortable and happy. Every effort is made
to heal the patient physically, mentally and spiritually.
Whether you are one mile or three thousand miles from the
CITY OF HOPE there are many reasons why this Medical Center is
important to YOU.
