Michigan Communities Organize
For Three-Month Bond Campaign

> <

Representatives of several
Plichigan communities conferred
with Detroit and national Israel
bond leaders, at an all-day con-
ference, Sunday, at Hotel De-
troiter, on plans for bond cam-
paigns for the coming three
months.
Phillip Stollman, chairman of
the Detroit bond organization,
said he was disturbed by the
decline in bond sales and ap-
pealed to the gathering to spur
their efforts in behalf of Israel
in the coming moths, in order
that the 1954 sales may equal
the previous year's.
Max Osnos, acting in behalf
of the national bond organiza-
tion, presented scrolls, in ap-
preciation of • their efforts for
the Israel bond drives, to the
following organizations: Jew-
ish Women's European Wel-
fare, Radomer Aid Society,
Congregation Aaron Moshe,
Northwest Child Rescue and
Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith,
all of Detroit; Jewish Center,
Bay City; Jewish Community
Council, Flint. -
Principal addresses at the
conference were delivered by Dr.
James G. Heller, chairman of
the bond • organization's com-
munity leadership division, and
Rabbi Zev Gold, world Mizrachi
leader and chairman of the
Torah division of the Jewish
Agency.
Dr. Heller urged that Ameri-
tan Jews protest to the U.S.
Government against the arming
of the Arab states to the detri-
ment of Israel.
Rabbi Gold explained the val-
idity of Jewish interests in Is-
rael's upbuilding and the im-
portance to the world of making
Israel secure as a bulwark for
democracy.
Both speakers described the
importance of Israel bonds to
the economic growth of Israel.
Speakers at the conference
also included Mrs. Joseph
Katchke, David Safran, Sidney
Shevitz, Elias Goldberg, Mrs.
Mina Bargman, Albert Winkel-
man of Bay City, Louis Levine
and others.
Peter S. Goldstein reported on
his recent trip to Israel with a

national bond delegation. Louis
Kasle of Flint presided.

Israel Not 'Panicky' Over
U.S. Arming of Arabs
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The peo-
ple of Israel "although anxious
and worried" over the Western
policy of rearming the Arab
states, are not "panicky" and are
determined not to permit it to
interfere with the work of build-
ing their country, Mrs. Golda
Myerson, Israel Minister of La-
bor, declared here.
Mrs. Myerson expressed "sor-
row and disappointment" that
arms are being sent to the Arabs
"while. they still threaten the
very existence of Israel." She
spoke at a dinner attended by
500 persons launching a labor-
management campaign in the
Greater New York food indus-
try to raise $1,000,000 through
State of Israel Bonds for the
economic. development of Israel.
The Israel Labor - Minister
pointed out that the people of
Israel have "the utmost confi-
dence" in their armed forces.
"The Israel Defense Army is
efficient, devoted; fearless and
highly trained," she said. She
emphasized that the investment
capital provided through the
purchase of bonds in the United
States had . ' enabled Israel to
make vast economic gains vital
to the young nation's security.
Sen. Kefauver Criticizes U.S.
Policy of Arming Arabs
Senator Estes Kefauver, of
Tennessee, termed as "well-
founded" the alarm felt by the
State of Israel over its security
as a . result of the "one-sided
policy of our State Department
in supplying arms to the Arab
states which threatens to upset
the status quo and the precari-
ous balance of military power in
the area."
"I favor every effort to win
the friendship of the Arab
states—but not at the expense
of impairing our friendship with
Israel or imperiling her secur-
ity," the Senator asserted. He
emphasized that "Israel is our
real ally and dependable friend
in that part of the world" and
that they "are proof against
the blandishments of Commu-
nist propaganda and fiercely op-
posed to totalitarian doctrines of
whatever brand." ,
Senator Kefauver, who recent-
ly returned from an extended
visit to Europe and the Middle
East, made his. statement in a
special report on his visit to Is-
rael in the form of a letter to
Mortimer May, president of the
Zionist Organization of America.
In his report, Senator Kefauver
paid tribute to Israel's "great
constructive efforts of the past
few years."
