In forming the organization,
its sponsors stated:
"Senator Ferguson has lonz

of the party in power. Occupy-
ing as he does the key posts of

Rabbi Chinitz Seeks to Maintain
Age-Old Excommunication of Spinoza
The current issue of "Ortho-
dox Jewish Life," official publi-
cation of the Union of Ortho-
dox Jewish Congregations of
America, contains an article by
Rabbi Jacob Chinitz, of Detroit,
in which strong objection is
taken to David Ben-Gurion's
recent plea that the excommu-
nication of Spinoza be revoked
and that the Jewish-philosopher
be readmitted into the Jewish
fold.
Basing his argument against
the acceptance of Spinoza as a
Jew among Jews on specific his-
toric records proving that Spi-
noza had a weakness for Chris-
tology and Jesus, Rabbi Chinitz
cites Silo Baron who made the
following reference to Spinoza
in his "Social and Religious His-
tory of the Jews":
"Forced carefully to scrutin-
ize every word with respect to
the Christian Gospels, his criti-
cism of the Hebrew Scriptures
was much sharper than that of
the New Testament. In fact, an
impression of leaning backwards
when speaking of Jesus and the
Gospels, while giving free reign
to his emotional rather than
intellectual opposition in dis-
cussing Mosaic legislation and
Hebrew prophecy, is unavoid-
able."
• Stating that "an interesting
parallel might be drawn be-
tween Spinoza and Jesus—both
looked for an inner essence of
religion," Rabbi Chinitz, holding
to his view that Spinoza was a
'Jesus-man," cites the following

from the Amsterdam philoso-
pher's Tractate:
"A man who can by pure in-
tuition comprehend ideas must
necessarily. possess a mind far
superior to those of his fellow
men, nor do I believe that any
may have been so endowed save
Jesus. To him the ordinances of
God leading men to salvation
were revealed directly without
words or visions.
"The wisdom of God took
upon itself in Jesus' human na-
ture. The old law was given
through an angel and not im-
mediately by God, whence it
follows that if Moses spoke with
God face to face, Jesus com-
muned with God mind to mind.
Jesus was sent to teach not only
the Jews but the whole human
race."
After quoting several such
passages from Spinoza's works,
Rabbi Chinitz sums up: "These
texts are not taken out of con-
text. Spinoza adopts the whole
mood of the New Testament, in-
cluding the implicit assumptions
that Christianity fulfills and
universalizes the narrower Juda-
ism, that Jesus was unique, that
the yoke of the law had been
removed."
"Freedom of conscience, of
education, of speech, of assem-
bly, are among the very funda-
mentals of democracy and all of
them would be nullified should
freedom of the press ever be
successfully challenged."—
Franklin D. Roosevelt.
