Hybrid Sweet Corn Produced in Israel's Weizmann Science Institute
REHOVOTH, Israel—A new
type of hybrid sweet corn° of a
high nutritive value, the first
and only one of its kind in Is-
rael, has been developed by Dr.
Ovid Shifris, head of Plant
Genetics Research at the Weiz-
mann Institute of Science in
Rehovoth. The hybrid combines
the desirable characteristics of
four different pure varieties.

flavor of the new sweet corn.
which has been named "P'ear
Rehovoth," are superior to the
field corn varieties n used ex-

The color is a glistening lus-
trous yellow, contrasted with the
matt-white of existing field vari-

The new variety is adapted for

In Israel and 20 other coup-

two pictured above, are counting
upon the United Jewish Appeal
for aid in the New Year ahead.
These children are living with
their parents in a transitional
village in Israel, awaiting re
settlement in an agricultural
colony. Elsewhere, other young-
sters need wholesome food, med-
ical treatment and other live-
saving aids which the humani-
tarian agencies of the United
Jewish Appeal can provide if
UJA can raise $50,000,000 in cash
by December 31. The UJA agen-
cies are the United Israel Appeal,
Joint Distribution Committee
and the United • Service for New
Americans.

—The UN, which has its own
bank, post office, hospital, etc.,
is not without its little house of
prayer—a non-denominational
"Shul" for meditation. Seldom,
however, do the political-mind-
ed delegates take time off to
visit this "Shul" which is situ-
ated in the western corner of
the main library. But visitors by
the hundreds flow into the 25-
chair "temple" daily for a few
quiet moments of communion.
The egg-shaped chamber is
graced by an altar made of a
polished trunk of an African
mahogany tree. On the ceiling
are ten lights in two V-shaped
sections which, when placed to-
gether, could easily form a Ma-
gen David. When President Eis-
enhower visited the UN for his
Inow-famous atom-bomb speech,
ihis f. •st request of the Secre-
tary-General was that he be tak-
en into this "Shul."

Moroccan Jewry Opens
Kindergarten in Mellah
Success crowned the efforts of
the Jewish community of Rabat,
capital city of Morocco, in its
long battle to improve educa-
i tional standards for youngsters
of the mellah (ghetto), when a
new kindergarten for 150 chil-
dren, was opened.
JDC has been working with
the Jewish Community Organ-
ization of Rabat for the past
two years on the creation of this
kindergarten as part of its plan
to remove children from the tra-
ditional hedorim, the primitive,i
one-room schools to which the
native Moroccan Jews have been
sending their children for many
centuries, it was reported by
Samuel Haber, JDC director for
Morocco.
