Rabbi Morris Kertzer served
as adviser in the preparation of
the impressive book, "What
Prayer Can Do,". by the editors
of Guideposts, with photographic
commentary by Lucien Aigner
and an introduction by Norman
Vincent Peale.
The book, published by Double-
day (575 Madison, NY22), points
out that in it "Protestant, Cath-
olic and Jew openly and simply
expresS their deepest convic-
tions." Dedicated to the memory
of Fulton Oursler, this impres-
sive volume developed out of an
article with the same title writ-
ten for Guideposts by Oursler.
Interestingly told, beautifully
printed, with many pictures, this
book prescribes courses for pray-
er: "morning on a r i s i n g, at
night, on retiring, before and
after meals, and one day of the
week, God's day, whether Satur-
day or Sunday."
; With some eliminations, "What
• Prayer Can Do" could easily have

• served as non-denominational.

• But in its present form. it is pri-
• marily christological. Only one
• of the pictures, showing a young
• man in tarns praying before a
seven-branched candlestick, has
a Jewish semblance.

ISTANBUL, (JTA)—The Turk-
ish government has made avail-
able 15,000,000 Turkish pounds
($5,357,00) for the importation
of goods from Israel within the
framework of the trade pact be-
tween the two countries.
Turkey has already exported
to Israel an equal amount of
goods, mostly agricultural prod-
ucts.
Trade between the two coun
tries has recently been held up
by delays within the Istanbul
Chamber of Commerce which
must pass on the price of all
imported goods. Pending action
by the chamber, import licenses
have been held up.
Recently, after talks between
Israeli representatives and the
government in Ankara, it was
decided to expedite the granting
of import licenses. Turkey
chiefly will buy cement, textiles
and refrigerators.

Ford Foundation Makes New
Grant for Aid to Refugees
GENEVA, (JTA)—The United
Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees, Dr. G. J. van Heuven
Goedhart, announced that the
Ford Foundation had made an
exception to its established pol-
icy of not engaging in further'
refugee work, and had decided
on a final grant to his office to
enable him to continue certain
programs begun under the
Foundation's initial donation of
$2,900,000 in September, 1952.
The new grant will be used
particularly for the resettlement
promotion program in overseas
countries and for a number of
youth programs. This new dona-
tion, amounting to $200,000, will
be administered by the High
Commissioner and the opera-
tional work will be undertaken
by selected voluntary agencies;
as witb the preceding grant,
