Says Bar Mitzvah
On Saturdays
Violates Sabbath
WASHINGTON, (JTA)—President Eisenhower issued this Rosh
Hashanah message to the Jews of the United States, through the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, which reads:
"On the occasion of the Jewish.New Year, my warm greet-
ings go to all Americans of Jewish faith.
"For the tens of centuries spanned by the history of the
Jewish people, members of your race have given to mankind
almost unbelievable examples of courageous devotion to noble
principles—to justice, to liberty, to the right of men to wor-
ship according to the inner voice of conscience. Such are
the principles which can now give the only sure guide to all
men as they seek to establish true peace in the world, the
peace which common people everywhere long for in their
hearts.
"From this New Year's Day forward, may the inspiration
of your devotion to these ideals give an ever more brilliant
the path leading
harmony among nations."

Shifting of the Bar Mitzvah
celebration would, Dr. Schachter
explains, avoid the gross viola-
tion of the Holy Sabbath. The
Bar Mitzvah boys would wear
tefillin and so would his father,
grandfathers and uncles on that
day.

The change would have defi-
nite advantages for the rabbi as
well. For example, Dr. Schach-

What would the nature of the
ceremony be? Rabbi Schachter
advocates a change of emphasis
from the Haftorah and its bless-
ings to Kriath Shema and possi-
bly Shemonoh Esrei. Arguing
that the Bar Mitzvah boy would
