A Year of Great Promise for American Jewry

The year 5715 promises to be a very healthy
one for Jewry. Israel feels economically stronger.
The immigration problem is being resolved for
thOse who must find new homes away from lands
of oppression. There is a keener appreciation
of the need for better educational systems.
Most encouraging of all is the position _of
American Jewry and the attitude of this, the
largest Jewish community in the world, on mat-
ters involving our future.
We are, of course, primarily concerned with
the status of American Jews. World Jewry will
be secure if American Jews can retain their posi-
tion as a libertarian group, as fearless fighters
for the right and as upholders of just causes." -It
is our feeling that the Jews of this country re-

Ameriban Jewry, in its present form, is
a young community. But its roots are sturdy.
While most of the 5,000,000 now residing here
are either immigrants or the sons of immigrants,
the fact is that we are one of the oldest groups
to have settled here, and as such we are a people
with a great tradition. We are, as we have in-
dicated in earlier issues, a pioneering people. We
continue to pioneer in many fields of endeavor.
We are creating great institutions, we are
extending our educational efforts, we are build-
ing hospitals and community centers. We do all
these things for our neighbors as well as for our-
selves. And the things we do for ourselves are
assuming increasing importance.
In truth, we are only now beginning to make
progress culturally. Like other groups in this

A Call for Peace

Rosh Hashanah is a time for re-evaluation
of our position as Jews and as citizens. It is a
time for re-dedication to the ideals aimed at
strengthening the cause of peace for all man-
kind.
The year 5715 is being ushered in at a time
when the entire world is an armed camp. • We
suffer from suspicions and from acts of aggres-
sion. . We are tormented by fears lest the world
erupt once again into a struggle that will involve
every living soul on the face of the earth.
. Our prayers therefore will be directed more
earnestly this year than ever before in supplica-
tion for peace among all nations and for amity
among all faiths.
The world always has suffered from the
threats of war. One sentence, in our-Bible, speaks
of a lull: we read in Joshua (11:23) that "the
land rested from war." We pray that this should
become a permanent blessing for mankind.
Proverbs (15:16) teaches us a great lessors
"Better is little with fear of the Lord than great –
treasure and trouble therewith."
May the truth of this be recognized by men
and nations, so that greed should be eliminated
from all hearts and so that humanity may share
the blessings of an amicable world.
Our prayer, therefore, is that 5715 should
be a year of peace, leading to the perpetuation
of good will for all time to come. We turn hum-
bly to the New Year with this solemn prayer. .
