Congress Activities
. Are Launched Here
The . American Jewish Con-
gress launched its activities for
the year at a meeting of the
Michigan Council, Sept. 23, at
the home of Mrs. Charles Fein-,
berg, vice president. On hand
were representatives from the
Women's Division, Stephen Wise,
Chaim Weizmann, and the Busi-
ness & Professional chapters.
Guest of the evening was High
Salpeter, national director of or-
ganization, former co-director
of UJA, and veteran leader in
Jewish affairs. He attributed the
phenomenal growth of new
chapters to the all-embracing
Congress program, which stres-
ses issues of immediate concern
to all American Jews.
In his first appearance before
the Council, Director Irving Ab-
ramovitz thanked the leadership
for their cooperation, and out-
lined his plans for the coming

upon the crop, declaring that, in
his opinion, such yields would
eventually save Israel large sums
in foreign currency. Last year's
cotton imports to this country
totalled $5,000,000.
An additional 62,000 acres of
arid land, in the northern sec-
tions of the Negev, will be under
irrigation by the fall of 1955, ac-
cording to an announcement by
Efraim Ben Artzi, director of the
Mekoroth Water Company.
The water will come from the
Yarkon Springs, and will be car-
ried in a new pipeline being laid
now, the water expert declared.
The pipeline will have a capacity
of 100,000,000 cubic meters per
year, he said.
