Recalling Andy Cohen

By BILL WOLF

(Copyright, 1954, JTA, Inc.)

This young man, who was brought to Israel with the help of
the United Jewish Appeal, came from a North African mellah, or
ghetto, where he was without a job and without a trade. Today,
(hanks to the training and settlement he has received in Israel,
he has learned the building art and is helping in the construction
of new permanent housing units needed to house newcomers and
resettle those now living in temporary villages. Since Israel's
establishment, the United Jewish Appeal has helped to bring more
than 723,000 men, women and children to the new State and has
provided them with land to cultivate, houses to live in, and tools
with which to earn a living. UJA is now in a special drive to raise
. - $50.:03,000 in cash to sustain the immigration, settlement, welfare
and rehabilitation programs of its three constituent agencies, the
United Israel Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee and the United
Service for New Americans.

Remember Andy Cohen?
Sports fans who have memories
dating back to the big leagues
around 1928 certainly will recall
the one-time second baseman
for the New York Giants.
Andy Cohen made his mark ;
as the second Jewish baseball
player to make good in the ma-
jor leagues. Johnny Kling, a
catcher, broke into the game
with the Chicago Cubs many
years before Cohen came into
the picture. Baseball was not a
sport which Jewish players
could crack. Finally, Andy made
his debut with the New York
Giants, after which he was hot
copy for the sports editors
because of his diamond exploits.
Andy never blossomed into a
great player. He started with
two strikes against him because
he replaced Rogers Hornsby at
second base in 1928. Any guy
following Hornsby had big shoes
to fill.
Where is Andy now?
He has just 'finished his fourth
season as manager of the Colo-
rado Bears in the Western
League. Two of his teams finish-
ed second, and one captured the
league championship.
Andy is married and has two
daughters. He does a lot of pub-
lic speaking, and is a popular
lecturer among sports fans.
Baseball, baseball, and more
baseball . • . that's Andy Cohen's
story, The game has been a cer-
tain theme in his life ever since
he left the University of Ala-
bama to go with the Waco Club
in the Texas League. He was
quickly snatched up by the New
York Giants. The price paid for
him was $25,000.
His career in the majors was
relatively short-lived. Andy was
sent to Newark in 1931, then to
Minneapolis. He launched a
career as a club manager, too&
time out to serve with the armed
forces in the second World War,
then returned to his coaching,
duties.
