Los Angeles: A Tercentenary Feature

Los Angeles is the Number
One community to be watched in
this country. It is the fastest
growing center in the land.
Its Jewish population has
quadrupled in less than 20 years, I
and it is now the second largest
Jewish community in the world,
With a Population believed to be i
450,000.
Its first Jews came there in
1849. Its present settlers include
Jews from all parts of the coun-
try.

The first L. A. synagogue,
formed about 100 years ago as
Congregation Bnai Brith, is now
known as the Wilshire Blvd.
Temple. There are about 150
synagogues in L. A. at present.
There are many philanthropic
organizations, a strong Zionist
movement, a Federation and
Community Council, two weekly
newspapers.
Many Jews have held impor-
tant public posts in L. A.

St. Louis: A Tercentenary Feature

St. Louis, Mo., is the oldest
Jewish settlement in the Mis-
sissippi Valley.
Wolf Bloch was the first Jew-
ish settler in this frontier com-
munity in 1816. But it was not
until 1836 that the first Minyan
was held on Rosh Hashanah.
Judah Touro, the famous
American Jewish philanthropist,
gave $3,000 in 1855 to help estab
lish Bnai El Temple.
There now are imposing Re-
form, Conservative and Ortho-
dox congregations here and a
strong Zionist movement. There
also are well established Young

St. Louis is one of

communities in the land where
it has been difficult to establish
a Jewish newspaper, but an1
