Legion Urges Peaceful
Solution in Middle East
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
American Legion convention
adopted a resolution describing,
the Near East as a "critical and
strategic spot on the pic-
ture" and stating that "we earn-
estly hope for the peaceful set-
tlement of the serious and his- •
torical differences and contro-
versies in this troubled area, as •
has occurred in the dispute over
the Suez Canal and Iranian oil "
The preamble to the foreign
affairs resolution credited
"United Nations Patrols" for "in-
suring peace. ... between Israel
and the Arabs."
. A recent congressional move,
supported by Secretary of State
Dulles, to return confiscated
German industrial assets to
former Nazis, was opposed. The
Legion said: "Believing that the
American Veteran has a vested
interest in enemy assets seized
by the United States and that
such assets should continue to
be devoted to the purposes pro-
vided by the War Claims Act,
the American Legion opposes
any effort to return these assets
to their former owners or their
governments."
The Legion also opposed "any
and all further attempts now
being made or which may be
made to weaken, destroy or re-
peal the McCarran-Walter Im-
migration and Nationality Act."
The widening of grounds for de-
portation and denaturalization
was advocated.

French Police Chief
Receives Israel Honors
PARIS, (JTA) — Francois Col-
laveri, police prefect of the AM
Department, sailed from Mar-
seilles for Israel as an official
guest of the Israel government
for two weeks.
The invitation was extended
in gratitude for his services to
visaless Jewish immigrants in
the port of Marseilles before the
formation of Israel and for ac-
tivities during the war in behalf
of Jews, which earned him the
enmity of the Gestapo.
When the "hell ship" Exodus
was in Marseilles harbor during
the postwar period, loaded to
the gunwales with visaless Jews
whom the British were attempt-
ing to keep out of Palestine,
Collaveri organized supply serv-
ices for the 4,500 Jews on the
vessel. With the assistance of
the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee, this supply system fed the
immigrants during their entire
stay in the harbor.
