The 13 Months in This
Year's Jewish Calendar

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1954, JTA, Inc.)

The Jewish calendar year is
a lunar year. That means that
it is calculated according to the
revolutions of the moon around
the earth. Therefore, t h e
months are of 29 and one-half
days duration. The Solar year,
which is reckoned according to
the earth's revolutions around
the sun, has months usually
either 30 or 31 days in length.
I In comparison to the solar
year, then, there is a shortage
of 11 days in the Hebrew calen-
dar each year. It is necessary to
equalize this difference so that
the Passover always falls in the
spring time. Otherwise Passover
would fall back 11 days each
year and thus come out in dif-
ferent seasons at different years.
To prevent this, an additional
month of 80 days is added to the
Hebrew calendar seven times in
19 years.
Thus, for example in a cycle
of 19 years, the third, sixth,
eighth, eleventh, fourteenth,
seventeenth and nineteenth
years, respectively, are the years
in which the extra month is
added to equalize the two calen-
dar systems. As complicated as
this seems this lunar system of
the Hebrew calendar has proven
more accurate than that of our
secular Gregorian Calendar
which has already been adjusted
because of apparent inaccuracy.
One of the prime reasons for
adding the extra month . to the
Month of Adar and calling it
Adar II is the Passover holiday
' which must fall in a certain
season. Adar is the last month
before the spring month of Ni-
san in which the Passover festi-
val falls. Also, there is a mo-
tive of adherence to the words
; of Scripture in which it is writ-
Iten in the Book of Esther that
Adar is the twelfth month. Since
the Biblical system of number-
' ing the months begins with Ni-
san, adding a month to any
other month would make Adar
the thirteenth month instead of
i the twelfth, as the first Adar is
in the case of every leap year.
Also, the other months, some of
which are numbered according
to their sequence after 'Nisan
would also retain their original
number. Thus Tishri would al-
ways_ be the -seventh month,- etc..

Report Eliayshiv
Visits Birobidj an

JERUSALEM, (TTA) - Am-
bassador Shmuel Eliayshiv, Is-
rael envoy to Moscow, is pre-
paring for an expected visit this
week to Birobidjan, in Soviet
Siberia. Eliayshiv will be the
first Israeli diplomat to visit
that area.
The Moscow Ambassador will
not leave, however, until after
the departure from the Soviet
Union of Mrs. Vera Weizmann,
widow of Israel's first president,
who arrived last week on a visit.
Eliayshiv scheduled a reception
for Mrs. Weizmann and facili-
tated her tour.
Reports emanating from New
York that Dr. Nahum Goldmann,
chairman of the JewiSh Agency
executive, was to meet Soviet
Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei
Gromyko in London to discuss
emigration of Soviet Jews was
denied by Dr. Goldmann,
Dr. Goldmann said that it
would be extremely difficult for
' the Russian diplomat to meet
him in London especially since
Gromyko has not held the Am-
bassadorship to London for two
years. The denial was cabled to
JTA from Dr. Goldmann's office
in Switzerland.
Another denial was forthcom-
ing from the European executive
of the World Jewish Congress
regarding a report that WJC's
coordinating committee, at its
recent Zurich meeting, had de-
cided to seek permission to ,send
a delegation to the Soviet Union.
A WJC spokesman said that
the report was apparently based
on a misunderstanding, a n d
that, although the proposal had
been made in various quarters,
it did not come up for discussion
at the Zurich meeting.

`Eliminate Prejudice,'
Major Parties Urged

Six national religious leaders
in the United States joined in
urging the national Republican
and Democratic Parties to
adopt -a "Fair Elections Prac-
tices Declaration," eliminating
racial and religious prejudices
from the 1954 congressional
campaign. and to set up ma-
chinery for policing any viola-
tions.
Both the Republican national
chairman, Leonard W. Hall, and
the Democratic national chair-
man, Stephen-P. Mitchell, were
asked also to transmit the elec-
tions statement to their respec-
tive state chairmen so that
they, too, could indicate pub-
! licly their approval of its con-
' tents.
The leaders asking adoption
of the Declaration are: The Rt.
Rev. Henry Knox Sherrill, pre-
siding Bishop of the Protestant
Episcopal Church in the U.S.A.:
The Most Rev. Edwin V. O'Hara,
Bishop of the Catholic Diocese,
Kansas City. Mo.; Dr. Julius
Mark, Rabbi - of the Temple
Emanu-El, New York; Dr.
George N. Shuster, president,
Hunter College, New Y.° r k
prominent Catholic layman;
Mrs. Douglas Horton (Mildred
McAffee Horton), president,
National Social Welfare Assem-
bly and prominent Protestant
lay leader; Irving M. Engel,
president, American Jewish
Committee.
I The anti-prejudice declara-
tion was endorsed in 1952 by
Postmaster General Arthur
Summerfield, then national Re-
publican chairman, and by
Frank E. McKinney, then na-
tional Democratic chairman. It
calls for organizing non-parti-
san, non-sectarian committees
in every community in the
United States "to keep a watch-
ful eye on campaign activities
and to call to the attention of
political leaders any instances
of appeal based on religious or
racial prejudice."
