Our Letter Box

Jewry Must Be Patient
In Spiritual Evolution

Editor, The Jewish News:
Rabbi M. Robert Syme, of Tem-
ple Israel, pinpointed one of
the tragedies of our day when
he wrote in an article in The
Jewish News, "The educational
activities of our religious insti-

tutions are almost completely
child centered."

It is certainly true that today
Jewish parents regard their re-
ligion as they do the Santa
Claus myth—something children
should believe in because it
makes them behave, but should
recognize as nonsense once they
mature.
The explanation is essen-
tially historical. Because Eurci-
pean Judaism was primarily
directed toward sustaining a
large agrarian membership, its
spiritual and intellectual as-
pects were supplanted by an
extreme emphasis on cere-
mony.
The European Jewish farmers
and small merchants who
worked 12 to 16 hours a day had
neither the time nor the
strength to develop themselves
into compassionate, humanitar-
ian individuals. Yet, they were
able to perform many "rituals"
such as eating matzohs or tell-
ing their children of the mira-
culous happenings of their an-
cesters in Israel.
However, in this c o u n t r y,
where a highly intellectual leis-
ure group is developing, yet one
which is under extreme emo-
tional tension, agrarian Judaism
becomes crude and simple. Cere-
monial needs are met largely
out of r e l i g i o u s institutions,
while the spiritual needs of the
community remain unsatisfied
because its religion still appeals
to the primitive mind.
The transition to a more
spiritual Judaism, which
1. began at the turn of the cen-
tury, has been, and will re-
main, a slow process. Mean-
while, 19th century Judaism
because of its simplicity in
many respects, will be rele-
gated to children under 13.
Once this transitionary period
is completed, our religion will
once again appear to be any-
thing but childish. In its his-
torical form, Judaism embodies
sincerity, humility, mercy, dig-
nity, education and brotherhood
. . . Until the day arrives when
spiritual Judaism does replace
i t s agrarian predecessor, pa-
tience will remain one of our
greatest religious virtues.
