and a decline. Only the Syna-
gogue preserved i t s existence
uninterruptedly throughout the
saga of American Jewish his-
tory.
There were times when some
of these newer organizations
and institutions in Jewish life
s e e in e d to overshadow the
scope and effectiveness of the
Synagogue but at no time did
they completely displace the
Synagogue as an historic Jew-
ish institution which rendered
indispensable service to the
Jew as an individual and to

the Jewish community in its
effort to maintain its continu-
ity and identity. Today we
find that the Synagogue is the
most dynamic of all Jewish
institutions. It serves as a
barometer in every community
to register the vitality and the
dynamic nature of its .com-
munal life.

Other Jewish organizations, im-
portant and necessary as they
are, express only fragmentary
Jewish interests.
Only the Synagogue represents
the all-inclusive nature of Jew-
ish belonging, religious, philan-
thropic, spiritual, fraternal, edu-
cational and social. It symbol-
izes the totality of Jewish life,
the wide gamut of Jewish ex-
perience as well as the all em-
bracing nature of J u d a i s m.
Membership in a Synagogue
identifies the Jew with God as
he has been historically con-
ceived by our people, unites him
with the spiritual brotherhood
of Israel everywhere in the
world and commits him to a
ceaseless effort for survival and
for a creative life in the future.
This does not of course cast
any unfavorable reflection
upon any other Jewish insti-
tution which advances some
important phase in modern
American and World Jewish
life. Many of these are very
