THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
OF
By RABBI M. ROBERT SYME
Temple Israel
.Editor's Note: This is an-
other article in the series on
the status of our religious in-
stitutions, being published by
The Jewish News on the occa-
sion of the American Jewish
Tercentenary. R a b b i Syme's
is the first in a series of state-
ments by Conservative, Ortho-
dox and Reform Rabbis on the
function and future of t h e
Synagogue and its place in
democratic society.
This is the tercentenary year.
It was in the year 1654 that the
first Jew landed in what is now
New York. Many celebrations
will take place. Jews will engage
in a sort of "cheshbon hane-
fesh"—to examine our contribu-
tions to America, and the state
of health of our faith. It is
therefore in order to analyze the
Status of the synagogue.
More than Israel has pre-
served the synagogue, the syna-
gogue has preserved Israel. After
the destruction of the Temple,
when Jews were scattered to all
parts of the Roman Empire, it
was the synagogue that sus-
tained the Jewish people and
assured its survival. Can it con-
tinue to do so?
On the surface it would ap-
pear that the synagogue today
plays a vital role in the life of
American Jewry. Every day we
hear reports of new buildings
being erected. In many maga-
zines we read statistics of grow-
ing synagogue membetship. Yet
if we delve into the heart of the
matter; we know that the mod-
em synagogue leaves much to
be desired. A synagogue has
meaning only if Jewish parents
are imbued with the will to
weave Jewish ceremonies and
observances like a golden thread
into the fabric of their chil-
dren's lives. A synagogue has
significance only if there are
people within who are inspired
and instructed in the/ ways of
God and goodness.
One of the tragedies of our
day is the fact that we have
reduced the synagogue school to
a kindergarten. There was a
time when the fathers were edu-
cated first, and then the
dren. We have apparently for-
gotten this tradition of our
people. The educational activi-
ties of our religious institutions
are almost completely child-
centered.
This then is the challenge that
confronts the synagogue in the
year 1954. The prophet has said
"Where there is no knowledge,
the people perish." Let that be
our motto. Let there be knowl-
edge, a spirit of wisdom and
understanding, and we need not
fear for the Jewish future. Let
us have faith that American
Jewry which has successfully
overcome so many obstacles in
its long and illustrious career,
will meet and triumph over this
challenge. If we will but under-
take our task with vision and
hope, we shall assure not merely
the survival but also the revival
of American Jewry.

Mapai, General Zionist Rift
Appears Headed for Solution
TEL AVIV, ( J T A ) — The
threatened split. in the Israel
government coalition between
its two largest parties, the
Mapai and the General Zion-
ists, seems on the way to peace-
ful soloution.
The parties had disagreed on
the timing for introduction of a
bill in Parliament which would,
in effect, hamper the activities
of small political parties by
ruling that no party receiving
less than 4.2 percent of the total
ballot in any election -may have
parliamentary representation.
