Nazi Voices Rerverberate in Germany

• According to
JTA report from Berlin,
Hermann Ahrens, a member of the Cabinet
in the state of Lower Saxony, told a public
meeting that Nazis are needed in key poli-
tical positions in Germany in order to • ex-
clude Jewish influence: Ahrens, Lower Sax-
ony Minister of Economics, speaking at a
rally of the BHE Refugee Party, of which
he was formerly floor leader in the Hanover
state legislature, did not mention the word
"Jew" but spoke of. "racially alien elements"
— a term that has been used to designate
Jews and "non-Aryans."
The JTA cable explains that "no trans-
lation can render the pungently anti-Semitic
flavor of the expression, but 'ethically alien
forces' or 'racially alien elements' come clos-
est."
This is part of a pro-Nazi campaign that
is reportedly becoming increasingly more in-
tense in Germany. The arrogance of the
Nazis was in evidence last week when, near
Kassel, 2,000 militant Hitlerites demanded
indemnification payments for the time they
spent in internment camps. It was reported
that' U.S. Military Government authorities
considered them dangerous security threats
because of their fervent fanaticism and
their high offices. Calling themsleves "As-
sociation of Former Internees," Nazis not
only are pressing claims but are demanding

that denazification court proceedings be ex-
punged from the record.
There are reports also of efforts on the
part of the German national section of
"World Brotherhood," an affiliate of the Na-
tional Conference of Christians and Jews, to
foster better human relations among all ele-
ments in Germany. But the negative,
former Nazi elements are far out of propor-
tion to the positive groups. The Hitler spirit
is beginning to dominate again. In fact, it
may never have lost ground. Therefore the
danger is not merely an anti-Semitic one:
it is threatening to the peace of the world.
Even in relations to Israel, with whom
Konrad Adenauer has • established friendly
contacts, there are questionable develop-
ments. A Nuremberg report states that
West Germany "has turned a cold shoulder"
to a request for a loan of $70,000,000 to Is-
rael on account of reparations payments due
the Jewish state. While Israel denies having
made the request, the "coldness" referred
to in the German press does not match the
amicability of the past.
A tense situation exists. It is unfortunate
and damaging to the hopes for peace. It
presents a challenge to those who are so
anxious to end denazification and to rearm
Germany.

Israel's Architecure

Gershon Canaan's Able Evaluation
Of Israel's 'Architectural Pattern

"Rebuilding the Land of Israel" is the impressive search for
an architectural pattern for Israel, made by the able young author,
Gershon Canaan, and published by Architectural Book Publishing
Co. (112 W 46th, N. Y. 36). Its interesting contents, and its many
scores of photographs, charts, illustrations and drawings, make it
equally important for the lay reader who will be fascinated by
its revelations and will be enchanted by what has taken place
under Jewish direction after Palestine's neglect by invaders.
Mr. Canaan, a graduate of the Israel Technion, is continuing
his studieS in this country. He fought with the British army in
the last war and participated in Israel's war of independence.
It is all the more interesting, therefore, that he should have been
able to accumulate the large amount of facts for his book.

Every section of Israel is covered in this bookthe Galil, the
Negev, the hills, the coastal plains and the valleys. In addition, he
reviews many historical happenings in order to introduce the
reader to conditions in the Holy Land.

In an epilogue, Mr. Canaan offers his credo as an Israeli
architect: "The amalgamation of Purpose and Design both com-
posed of basic organic elements results in Functional Architec-
ture . . The human being with his feelings and his physical
experience with the land of the newly formed nation will finally
become a homogenous part of the land and succeed in. finding
his OW71 expression . . . The nearer the architect approaches
nature, the greater will be his original power of creativeness
and his work will reflect his true attitude toward the nature of
the Land of Israel."
This is partial proof of the labor of love incorporated in Mr.
Canaan's work on Israel architecture. Historic buildings are de-
scribed and evaluated, there is no discrimination—churches as well
as synagogues being reproduced and commented upon—and the
architectural plans throw light on a new subject.
Synagogue planners everywhere will find that this book will
be a fine guide in the selection of ornaments and .menorahs, in
ark-building, in seating arrangements,
Students of history as well as architecture are introduced
to construction. trends in many ages and to the various motifs
in the building of houses of worship, from earliest times to
the present.
•Mr. Canaan's book is valuable also because it deals with geo-
graphy, with climate and climate control, with heat transmission,
humidity analyses and landscaping.
."Rebuilding the Land of Israel" is large in size and encyclo-
pedic in architectural contents and stands highly commended as
a work of authority on the subject ably covered by Gershon
Canaan.

Assimilator Favors intermarriage
In His 'History, of Anti-Semitism'

"2000 Years: A History of Anti-Semitism" is an impressive
title. But it is, mostly, a rambling account of Jewish history, an
haphazard search for a solution and a conclusion that is in the
rejected field: assimilation.
The author, Emil J. Long, who was born in Hungary in 1880,
who has been in the furniture business and in politics, advocates
changes in Jewish procedure. As the publisher, Exposition Press
(386 4th, NY 16), predicts, "this book will provoke strong reactions
for those who disagree" with the author. They are mild in their
evaluation. Mr. Long doesn't have a chance to win Jewish en-
dorsement.
Mr. Long used poor taste when he speaks of Jews' love for
money. He is historically wrong when he writes: "In Jerusalem,
the Judaic priests thought for a little while that they had killed
Jesus and so had silenced him." It doesn't even make sense.
But, read this: "To find a place in the world, the Jew must
break away from the ancient hierarchy and the 'official' Jews
who prestune to dictate his course of life and perpetuate his
`strangeness,' his reputation among non-Jews in many countries
as alien and different . . The emancipated and assimilated Jews
of the world have freely intermarried with non-Jewish people,
but the mass of Jews have not and have continued to marry
down through the ages with their own kind. This is a vestige
of ancient tribalism, the instinct to keep the race 'pure' and
'unadulterated,' and has been one of the most important factors
in setting the Jew apart."
Enough quoted! When a man seeks to lead you to believe
that there is something wrong in sticking to your own kind, and
ignores the truth that these very loyalists nevertheless are be-
friending the world, he has missed a - lot: mainly the truth. The
reviewer does not need a better reason for rejecting and disliking
this book..
