Yiddish Not a

Foreign

Language, Premier Says
The Yid-
TEL AVIV, (JTA)

dish language is not considered
a foreign tongue here, and will
not be so considered, Prime Min-
ister Moshe Sharett declared this
week. Recently, there had been
a proposal for introduction of a
bill in the Israeli Parliament,
labelling Yiddish a foreign lan-
guage.
While thus refusing to back
those who would "outlaw" Yid-
dish, however, Mr. Sharett made
a plea for strengthening and ex-
panding the understanding of
the Hebrew language in Israel.
Such acceptance of Hebrew is
incumbent, he said, even on the
Yiddish - language newspapers
and writers, because the Hebrew
language must be employed as
one of the main channels for
integration of newly-arrived im-
migrants into the life of this
country.

Winnipeg Hebrew., Yiddish Schools Merged

WINNIPEG, (JTA)—Two Jew-

Yiddish and the other Hebrew,
decided to merge into a single
all-day school, thus creating a
pilot project in Jewish educa-
tion which may influence the
Jewish education system in other
parts of Canada and, possibly,
even in the United States.
The decision to combine the
two schools and initiate the first
jointly-operated Hebrew - Yid-
dish school curriculum was re-1
ceived here enthusiastically with
widespread satisfaction. The
combined schools are the Herz-1
