Berke Reports Increase
In Histadrut Total
From Cash Fund Drive

Harold Berke,. director of the
Detroit Histadrut Campaign and
representative to the communi-
ties in this region, returned to
Detroit this week following an
extensive tour of cities through-
out Michigan and nearby states.
Reporting that cash income to
the national campaign from wel-
fare funds in this area already
exceeds the total achieved last
year, Berke added. that the sum
will be considerably greater at
the close of the fiscal year,
Sept. 30.
Nahum Guttman, director of
community relations for the na-
tional campaign, advises that
the increase has followed a na-
tional pattern. He claims the
increase is due to the addition
of new communities to those
participating in the drive, plus
the revival of a number of old
contacts.
Plans currently are going for-
ward, Berke stated, for the sec-
ond annual Histadrut caravan
to tour Michigan and Ohio com-
munities this fall. Through the
medium of lectures, films and
art, the caravan portrays Hista-
drut's role in Israel's develop-
ment.
Plans also are being formu-
lated for the 1955 Histadrut
drive, with members of the
steering committee me e t i ng
throughout the summer months.
Also carried out --through the
summer was the cash collection
drive, in which canvassers
worked to clear the books of
outstanding campaign balances.
Though officially closed last
April, the drive continues to
bring in contributions from in-
dividuals and organizations, the
most recent being a collective
contribution from Messrs. and
Mesdames Kravitsky, • Shaingold,
Gatlin, Krause, Shaposnik, Bock
and Rosenstein.

Community Hiss.
To Reign Over
City's Firemen

Unofficially these days, lovely,
19-year-old Beverly Ruth Karbal,
is sporting the name of Miss
Sparks.
She and eight other winsome
young ladies are forming the
court for Miss Flame, who is
Myrtle Ann Coyle, the young
lady who will preside over the
Detroit Firemen's Field Day on
Saturday and Sunday, at Briggs
Stadium.
Miss Karbal, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Karbal, of 4062
Leslie, was a Michigan State Col-
lege student until this June when
she took a job at Schatten Realty
Co., on Davison. Working as a
secretary, Miss Karbal likes her
work so well, she is not planning
to return to school.
In fact, the spectacle, the
thrills and excitement which at-
tend an attendant to a queen
have opened new vistas for the
pretty young miss, who is the
only Jewish girl represented in
Miss Flame's court.
Beverly is thinking of entering
a few other contests. Perhaps
the Miss DSR competition will be
next, she says.
During the past two weeks
since she was named a finalist
in the Firemen's contest, she has
been making the rounds of the
city, appearing on several tele-
vision shows and meeting the
public in person at many spots
throughout the city.
A graduate of Central High
School, Beverly is a member of
Theodor Herzl Chapter, of Bnai
Brith Young Women.
