Israel Leaders Advocate Yiddish
As Country's 2nd National Language

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Yiddish must not be looked upon

as a foreign language in Israel, but should be considered a

A GENTLEMAN with an un-
wieldy box of flowers under his
arm was about to board a Madi-
son Avenue bus recently in New
York when local TV script writer
' Eileen S c h u s t e r, visiting her
family in the big city, hailed
him . . . She was sure she recog-
nized him, but for the life of
her couldn't 'recall his name . .
He looked equally puzzled, but
let the bus go by, and shook her
hand warmly . • There followed
one of those animated, super-
cordial exchanges of amenities
that always feature the meeting
of two people who aren't sure of
each other's identity . Fin-
ally, the gentleman said, "It's
been fine seeing you again, but
I really must run" . , Just as
he stepped on the bus, Eileen
remembered, in a frightening
flash, one, why his face was
familiar, and two, that she never
had met him in her life . . . It
was ex-President Herbert
Hoover.

ED KAHN of Kahn and Kahn
Advertising, likes to tell of the
sales manager of a very reputa-
ble firm holding up an order
book .. . "This," he said, "is the
thing that puts business on the
books of our company year after
year" . . And then turning to
the advertising manager, he ask-
ed, "Can you show me a single
order that advertising ever put
on my order book?" . . • "I think
I can answer your question," re-
plied the advertising executive,
"if you will first answer one of
mine. Will you show me a single
load of hay that the sun ever
put in a barn?"

A FELLOW MAGISTRATE re-
cently told Judge Nate Kaufman
about a couple being ushered
into the court-room as their case
was called . . . The wife was a
strong, healthy, broad-houlder-
ed Irish woman ... her husband
a meek and obviously submissive
little man . . . The judge looked
sharply at the meek male and
said, "You are accused of beat-
ing your wife. What have you
to say?" . . "Guilty, sir," said
the little man unhesitatingly .. .
"$25 or 10 days," was the mag-
istrate's prompt decision .
Later, he told Nate, a court of-
ficial, commenting on the case,
asked him if he hadn't been a
bit severe in punishing the poor
little fellow . .. "Well," was the
response, "I had to give him
something for bragging!"

Reform Youth Organizations

Report 3,000 New Members

STARLIGHT, Pa., (JTA)
More than 3,000 youngsters have
joined youth clubs at Reform
Temples this year, it was report-
ed at the annual meeting of the
board -of directors of the National
Federation of Temple Youth,
teenage arm of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations.
This brings the membership in
the Federation's youth clubs to
18,000. The meeting elected Rob-
ert M. Seltzer, 19, of St. Louis,
president of the Federation. Selt-

second national language, since it assists in spreading Hebrew
and deepens national consciousness among Jews.
This opinion is the result of a poll taken today among 20
leading members of the Israeli Parliament, representing all
parties from the Mapai to Communist. The poll was con-
ducted in connection with the intention of Minister of Interior
Israel Rokach to present on Monday to the Parliament the
draft of a bill to regulate the status of the foreign-language
press in the country.
A delegation of editors of Hebrew 'newspapers recently
conferred with leaders of all the parties represented in Par-
liament, and demanded certain restrictions for the foreign-
language press, or at least to compel the foreign-language
newspapers to introduce a Hebrew section in their pages.
Today's poll indicates that the party leaders are inclined to
exclude the Yiddish press in Israel from any such restrictions.
