Rumor Eisenhower Will Appoint
Byroade U.S. Ambassador to Egypt

AT THE BEGINNING of their
married life, Mr. and Mrs. Ed-
ward Deutch made the arrange-
ment that whenever he had a ,
bad day at the office, he would
put his hat well over on the left
side of his head on returning
home . . If she had a bad day
at home, she would put her
apron on backwards . . . Each
undertook to respect the other's
danger signal . . . They are still
happily married ;after 48 years.

dear, if you love God," she an-
swered . . . "and will you be
there?" he asked again . . "I
hope so, and daddy'll be there,
too," said Mrs. Sorock . . . Little
Manny shook his head emphati-
cally . . . "My daddy won't be
there. He couldn't leave the
store."

Mindlin about the storekeeper in
Florida who had for some time
displayed in his window a card
inscribed, "Fishing Tickle" . . .
Sol drew the proprietor's atten-

anyone told you of it before?"
he asked . . . Oh, yes," said the
dealer placidly, "many have
mentioned it, but whenever they
drop in to tell me, they always

BEFORE LEAVING ON his

related that after the service
one Saturday morning, he was
approached by an old lady who
expressed great appreciation
over his discourse . . . "Why,
Rabbi," she said, "you can never
know what your service meant
to me. It was just like water to

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—State
Department sources revealed
that a White House statement
is expected shortly, in which
President Eisenhower will an-
nounce the appointment of Hen-
ry A. Byroade as new Ambassa-
dor to Egypt.
Mr. Byroade is now Assistant
Secretary of State for Near
Eastern Affairs. His assignment
to Egypt would be aimed at im-
plementing a policy decision
made here to strengthen Egypt
militarily as quickly as possible,
owing to imminent withdrawal
of British forces from the Suez
Canal area.
Mr. Byroade will have the mis-
sion of fostering improvement of
American relations with the
Arab League, with a view of
creating a Middle East command
of Arab states linked to NATO,
in order to defend the Near East
from Communist penetration.
State Department sources said
that inclusion of Israel in such
a pact is not contemplated be-
cause the Arabs would not agree
to cooperate with Israel.
•Dulles' Policy Attacked
House minority whip John
M c C o r m a c k, Massachusetts
Democrat, criticized the Repub-
lican administration's policy of
arming Arabs hostile to Israel,
and calling Secretary Dulles'
new "impartial" policy in the
Near East an "ignominious fail-
ure."
Rep. McCormack said, in the
course of a discussion of the
foreign aid program, that Sec-__
retary Dulles "has supplied the
Arab leaders with a rationale for
the continuance of their in-
transigent attitudes and actions.
"Because of the new policy of
the United States, McCormack
said, "hopes for peace become
dimmer in the area."
The wisdom of arming Iraq
was questioned by Rep. McCor-
mack, who indicated that the
administration has ignored
Iraq's "political instability, re-
pression of minorities, and the
abortive pro-Nazi revolt of 1941."
U.S. Assures Right for Jews
To Visit Wailing Wall
The United State's Govern-
ment is continuing its efforts
to assure that Jews will have
the right to visit the Wailing
Wall and other Holy Places in
Jordan-held territory, Assistant
Secretary of State Byroade in-
formed Rabbi Eliezer Silver,
leader of the Union of Orthodox
Rabbis of the United States and
Canada.
Rabbi Silver had appealed to
President Eisenhower to use his
-good offices to obtain permission
for a Jewish pilgrimage to the
Wailing Wall. Informing the
Orthodox leader that his appeal
had been referred to the State
Department for consideration,
Mr. Byroade wrote:
"The Department deeply sym-
pathizes with the desire of the
American rabbis, who will at-
tend a World Conclave of Ortho-
dox Jewish Laymen and Rabbis
at Jerusalem, to make the tradi-
tional pilgrimage to the Wailing
Wall, and has carefully inquired
into this matter.
"As you know, your Govern-
ment has consistently supported
free access td the Holy Places
for peoples of all religious faiths.
In view of the present division of
Jerusalem and the unfortunate
tension between Israel and Jor-
dan, however, it is evident that
practical arrangements cannot
be worked out for the pilgrimage
to the Wailing Wall until such
time as there is an improvement
in the relations of these two na-
tions.
"I sincerely hope that in due
course persons of all religions
may be able to gather freely at
their places of worship without
fear of their safety. I can assure
you'that your Government con-
tinues to support efforts to
bring this about."
