By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

Why • is the Ninth of Ab—oc-.1
curring on Aug. 8—considered
the most tragic day of the He-
brew Calendar?
The Mishnah (Taanit 4:6)
mentions five -tragic events that
occurred on this date at different
periods in Jewish history. In
the days of our desert travels it
was decreed that our forefathers
who left Egypt would not be the
same ones who would enter Is-
rael. This decree was given on
this tragic date. The first Tem-
ple was destroyed by Nebuchad-
nezzer of Babylonia on.this date,
in the year 586 B.C.E. The sec-
ond Temple was destroyed by
Titus of Rome on this date in
the year 70. The fortress of
Bethar fell on this day and the
revolt of Bar Kochba was sub-
dued. Also, the holy city of
Jerusalem was ploughed up by
Hadriaff in 135 on this day.
This was indeed not the last
of the tragedies to befall Israel
on this day. In 1290 King Ed-
ward I signed the decree expell-
ing the Jews from England on
that day. In 1492 in Spain some
300,000 Jews began to leave the
country, led by Abarbanel after
Ferdinand and 'Isabella had
signed a decree ordering their
expulsion. For these and even ,
other tragedies that occurred on I
this date it was considered the
most tragic day in the Jewish
calendar. And yet, Jewish hopes
have not faded, for it is claimed
by tradition that the Messiah
was born on this date. In the
meantime, it is still observed as I,
an important fast day.
The Prophet Jeremiah, who
witnessed the destruction of the
first Temple left us very vivid
and lamentful impressions in his
Book of Lamentations, which
are a part of the Holy Scriptures.
In this Book the prophet mourns
the suffering of the people who
were forced into exile and the
country which was deprived of
its historic people. • While casti-
gating the leaders for their fail-,
ure in leading the people of Is-
rael in the proper paths and
thereby bringing about the de-
struction of the Temple, he also
offered prayers for the Almighty
urging compassion for the people
of Israel. Its contents makes the
Book of Lamentations a fitting
book for the anniversary of the
Idestruction of . the Temple, the
t fast of the Ninth of Ab.
