WASHINGTON—Well informed
sources here denied a report that
the Western Powers hope to
establish a defense base in Is-
rael. The report emanating from
London said that Britain is
secretly sounding out Israel on
the possibility of establishing a
base in Haifa.
The report emphasized that
the Haifa base would be one of
several to replace the British
base in the Suez Canal area
from where the evacuation of
the British troops is considered
imminent. Britain expects to
withdraw its main forces from
the Suez Canal to Cyrpus but at
the same time she seeks also to
organize a series of bases in
other countries in which troops
evacuated from Suez would be
stationed, the report stated.
The establishment of a base in
Haifa woad mean the inclusion
of Israel in the defense organi-
zation which the Western Pow-
ers are now attempting to or-
ganize in the Near East, the re-
port said, predicting the possi-
bility of the United States and
Britain making a major attempt
to end Arab-Israel hostility.

Dr. Goldmann stressed that

the question of Israel-German
relations will become much more
important next year, when Ger-
many is expected to regain Its
sovereignty.
On the Austrian-Jewish ne-
gotiations, he stressed that the
claims committee had decided
to wait until October for the
final Austrian offer.
