Conservative Rabbis' Move to Change
Kesubah Assailed at Orthodox Parley
Rabbi David B. Hollander of
new York was elected president
of the Rabbinical Council of
America, at the 18th annual
convention of the orthodox rab-
bis' organization here, at Hotel
/Detroiter, last week. Rabbi M. J.
Wohlgelernter of Detroit was
elected one of the vice-presi-
dents.
In one Of the principal ad-
dresses of the convention, Wal-
ter P. Reuther, UAW-CIO presi-
dent, condemned the McCar-
wan-Walter Act as "a symbol of
Immorality:" He expressed con-
fidence that labor soon will have
o guaranteed wage which, he
'aid, "will provide for greater
purchasing power."
Mr. Reuther criticized the se-
lection of James F. Byrnes as a
V. S. representative to the United
rations and said that the former
South Carolina governor and
• ebretary of State symbolized
'bigotry and intolerance and
the master race theory." Mr.
Reuther at the same time high-
ly commended Dr. Ralph
Sunche's efforts in the direction
of attaining the highest goals in
human relations.
Reuther stressed the unfor-

tunate "negative" approach
used by the free world, spear-
headed by the United States,
in its fight against totalitar-
ians of both the Fascist and
Communist variety.
Using the example of "that
jewel of democracy, the little
Israel, which fought for inde-
pendence, the right to live on its
own land, to build and preserve
democracy and social justice—
and won," Reuther called upon
the forces of the free world and
of the United States to adopt
the example of Israel wherever
the forces of Communism were
fighting the free world forces
for the affection of nations and
peoples.
In Reuther's view, if the free
world were to adopt a positive,
Israel-type of approach, particu-
larly to the colonial peoples, the
chances of the free world would
be much greater.
The rabbis -adopted a resolu-
tion urging labor unity and com-
mended the leadership of CIO
President Reuther and AFL
President George Meany.
The intention of the Con-
servative rabbinate in • this
country of changing the text
of the traditional Hebrew
marriage contract—the Kesu-
bah—was assailed at the con-
vention.
Addressing the convention, Dr.
Theodore Adams, retiring presi-
dent, said that the proposed
change is "nothing more than a
publicity stunt" and "an attempt
to break down basic traditions
that are holy." He claimed that
the proposed change would do
nothing to eliminate domestic
friction. "Judaism has survived
by linking itself to the past and
not by breaking with the past,"
the leader of the Rabbinical
Council declared.
A convention resolution urges
continued support by the rab-
binate of Hebrew Day Schools,
Yeshivoth and Orthodox institu-
tions of learning here _and in Is-
rael.
Expressing gratification over
the extension of Social Security
benefits, the rabbis urged more
