Russia Steps Up Anti-Religion Drive;
Execute Ryumin, Associate of Beria

LONDON, (JTA) — Reports
from Moscow indicate that the
Soviet government has embark-
ed on a new and intensified
campaign agaist religion, in an
effort r to discourage people
throughout the USSR from at-
tending churches and syna-
gOgues.
Copies of Pravda, official or-
gan of the Communist Party,
and of The Literary Gazette, a
leading newspaper in Moscow,
received here, carry articles call-
ing for an "unyielding cam-
paign" against religious activi-
ties.
In a front-page editorial,
Pravda requests Commun is t
propagandists to "show believers
the error of their way by scien-
tific and atheistic" counter-
attack. Of particular concern to
Pravda is the fact that more and
more Soviet children seem to be
"infected" v,Tith religious ideas.

Israel Rejects Romanian Charges; Asks Free Emigration

ity, has been executed for his
part in the frame-up of 15 Mos-
cow doctors, a number of whom
are Jewish, the Moscow Radio,
I heard here, announced.
Ryumin was a former aide of
the late Lavrenti Beria, executed
chief of the Soviet police. He was
convicted of having used pro-
hibited methods of investiga-
tion to force the doctors to con-
fess to having murdered Andrei
Zhdanov and Alexander Scher-
bakov, high Soviet officials dur-
ing the Stalin regime, through
faulty medicine.
Shortly after the death of
Premier Stalin, the doctors were
released, and Ryumin and sev-
leral aides were arrested for hav-
ing faked evidence of the "plot."
Pravda accused Ryumin of hav-
ing attempted to spread anti-
Semitic sentiment in the coun-
try through this plot.

JERUSALEM, (JTA1—The Is-
rael government has bluntly re-
jected Romanian charges that
"thousands" of Jews of Romani-
an origin are being prevented by
Israel from returning to Ro-
mania, and that a campaign of
incitement against Romania is
being carried on in the Jewish
state.
This was revealed in the Israel
Parliament by Premier Moshe
Sharett, who said that the reply
sent by the Israel government to
the government of Romania
termed these charges—contained
in a Romanian note of June 4—
"devoid of adequate foundation
in , fact."
The Israeli reply described as
"unconvincing" the Romanian
explanation that the more than
100 Jews condemned to long
prison terms in Romania were
guilt y of espionage. This 1 •
is "unacceptable" to worldwide
Jewish opinion, the Israeli note
said, asserting that the character
of the convicted men and women
—who devoted themselves to the
ideal of Jewish statehood in the
historic Jewish homeland—com-
pletely invalidates the accusa-
tion of espionage.
The Premier informed Parlia-
ment that Romania had been
told that the Israel government
was unable to infringe upon the
principle of freedom of thought
and expression upon which the
State of Israel is based to sup-
press spontaneous popular man-
ifestations of national Jewish
solidarity with the convicted
Romanian Jewish leaders. Such
popular expressions do not in-
terfere with the generally ac-
cepted procedure of correct in-
ternational affairs, Israel
stressed.
In its reply, the Israel govern-
ment reaffirmed its desire to
maintain and develop friendly
relations with Romania. In the
view of the Israel government,
it added, the release of the Jew-
ish prisoners and allowing them
to proceed to Israel would greatly
enhance relations between the
two countries. The Israel gov-
ernment is confident, the note
went on, that Romania would not
have reason to regret its generos-
ity and far-sightedness.
In rejecting the Romanian
charges that the Israel govern-
ment had prevented thousands
of Jews of Romanian origin from
returning to that_land, Mr. Shar-
ett told the House, the Israel
note had emphasized that no
one had been prevented from
leaving. The precise number of
those who wanted to leave, the
note said, was the number who
actually jeft-238.
On the other hand, Israel un-
